The short answer for DWT models
On the DWT line the commonest reason a machine will not start is the door not latching fully. The latch has to make a switch before anything else happens, and a rack pushed slightly proud or a seal that has swollen is enough to stop it.
What it looks like from the outside
- The panel is completely dead — No power reaching the machine, or its own supply has failed.
- It stops immediately after starting — It began and aborted, which is a different fault from never starting.
- The machine starts only if the door is pressed hard — The latch is marginal and will stop working entirely before long.
- The panel lights up but the start button does nothing — Power is fine; the machine is being stopped by a latch, a lock or a setting.
- NEAR MISS — it runs and leaks — Shut the water off and read the leak page; that one comes first.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because the latch operates a switch that gates everything else, and a rack pushed proud is enough to stop it making.
- Water supply valve closed — Many machines start the cycle and then stall waiting for a fill that cannot happen.
- Control board failure — Last and least likely, and the only one on this list that cannot be confirmed without a technician.
- Door latch switch failed — The latch feels normal and the switch behind it no longer makes, which is the harder version of the first cause.
What to look at first, second, third
- Before anything else — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Check for a delay countdown on the display — A machine that is waiting is not a machine that has failed.
- Note whether it works from cold and fails later — That pattern points at a thermal cut-out rather than at a switch.
- Check the racks are pushed fully in — A rack proud by a few millimetres holds the door off its latch and is invisible with the door shut.
Water and electricity in the same cabinet
Safety
Switch off the breaker or pull the plug, and close the supply valve, before any panel comes off a dishwasher. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this appliance puts live terminals and pressurised water within a hand of each other under the tub. The heating element in the sump stays hot well after a cycle ends, so give it time before you reach in.

When to call a technician
Call when the filter, the sump, the hose and the household waste are all proved clear and the machine still will not drain, or when the fault needs the sump cover or the pump disturbed. That is the point where water and live terminals share a space and it stops being owner work.
