The short answer for ARBA models
When an Avantgarde ARBA refrigerator stops making ice, the useful first question is whether water is arriving at all. Ice in the bin but fused into one lump is a completely different fault from an empty bin with a dry mould, and the two lead to different halves of this list.
What it looks like from the outside
- The dispenser works but the bin never refills — Production has stopped while the dispensing mechanism is fine.
- The ice tastes or smells of the freezer — Old ice that has been sitting through many cycles, which is itself a sign production has slowed.
- The mould is full of water but never harvests — Water arrives and the harvest cycle does not run.
- Production slowed gradually over months — The signature of a filter reaching the end of its life rather than of a sudden failure.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cabinet is warm — Then this is a cooling failure and the ice is only the first symptom you noticed.
The ranking for this family
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger harvest — The ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches its harvest temperature, so a warm compartment stops production entirely.
- Door not closing fully — A door held ajar by a package warms the compartment enough to stop harvesting long before the food spoils.
- Fill valve failed or its screen blocked — The valve has a fine screen on the inlet that catches scale, and a valve that buzzes without filling is the classic sign.
Working through it in order
- The order, and why it is this one — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: three of the four named above can be settled on ARBA models before a tool comes out.
- Run the through-door dispenser if the unit has one — Water at the dispenser proves supply, filter and pressure are all fine and moves the fault inside the ice maker.
- Listen for the fill valve buzz twice a day — A buzz with no water is a valve opening against nothing, which points upstream.
- Pull the unit out and follow the supply line for a kink — Look particularly where the line passes behind the cabinet, which is where it gets pinched.
What to isolate before you start
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off before any panel is disturbed, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply as well if the refrigerator has an ice maker or a dispenser, because that connection is at mains pressure and it is behind the cabinet where you will be working. Leave interlocks alone and leave the sealed system to a licensed technician.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
