Recognising it

- Start relay or capacitor on the compressor — Second. These are the components that get the compressor turning, they fail far more often than the compressor itself, and the audible click-and-silence pattern is their signature.
- Thermostat or control board not calling for cooling — Third. A control that never commands the compressor leaves everything else working normally, which is why the light and the fan can be fine while nothing gets cold.
- Compressor seized or on thermal protection — Last, deliberately. It is the diagnosis people reach for and the least likely of the four, and it is also the only one where the answer is usually to replace the appliance.
The diagnostic order
- Open the door and look at the light — This one observation splits the diagnosis in half before anything is touched.
- Listen at the back for a click, a hum or nothing at all — A click followed by silence means the start components; a steady hum means it is running; total silence means the control is not asking.
- Set the thermostat to its coldest and listen again — If the compressor starts on demand, the fault was the setting or a marginal control rather than the cooling side.
