The short answer for AWC models
When an Avallon AWC refrigerator stops making ice, the useful first question is whether water is arriving at all. Ice in the bin but fused into one lump is a completely different fault from an empty bin with a dry mould, and the two lead to different halves of this list.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The ice tastes or smells of the freezer — Old ice that has been sitting through many cycles, which is itself a sign production has slowed.
- The mould is full of water but never harvests — Water arrives and the harvest cycle does not run.
- Production slowed gradually over months — The signature of a filter reaching the end of its life rather than of a sudden failure.
- A buzz twice a day with no water arriving — The fill valve is being asked to open against a closed or blocked supply.

Causes on AWC, most likely first
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Fill tube frozen — A partial fill that dribbles rather than shoots freezes in the tube and then blocks every fill after it.
- Low household water pressure — Where the valve cannot open against the available pressure, the symptom is identical to a failed valve.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger harvest — The ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches its harvest temperature, so a warm compartment stops production entirely.
What to look at first, second, third
- The order, and why it is this one — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on AWC models, so they come first.
- Check whether the mould is wet or dry — Dry means no water is arriving; wet means water arrives and the harvest is what has stopped.
- Look at the bail arm or the sensor window first — Up is off. This single look resolves more stopped ice makers than every other check on this page combined.
- Listen for the fill valve buzz twice a day — A buzz with no water is a valve opening against nothing, which points upstream.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.

When to call a technician
Call a technician when the checks above have not changed anything, when the fault needs a meter on live terminals, or when the answer turns out to be the sealed system. Call the same day rather than waiting if there is a burning smell, if the cabinet or the plug is hot, or if the unit has tripped a breaker — those are electrical faults rather than cooling ones and they do not improve with time.
