Auseo Refrigerator: Not Cooling or Not Freezing
A refrigerator that has stopped holding temperature is almost always failing at one of three things: it cannot reject heat, it cannot move cold air, or it has lost its refrigerant charge. This page takes the same fault from a different starting point: not which subsystem is likeliest on an Auseo refrigerator, but when the trouble started. Compact and undercounter cabinets dominate this range, so heat-rejection and clearance rank above component failure. What ranks first here is something you can correct yourself in under an hour, which is the reason to work down the list in order rather than book a visit straight away.
What you are actually seeing
- Check your symptom against this list first.
- Cooling recovers for a day after the doors are left shut, then falls away again.
- Ice cream is soft while the freezer thermometer reads low — the sensor and the actual air are disagreeing.
- Both compartments are warm but the machine is running constantly and the side or back of the cabinet is hot to the touch.
- Not this fault: If the unit is completely dead — no light, no display, no hum — this is not a cooling fault; go to the will-not-start page.
Causes, grouped by when it started
- One entry per onset pattern first — the strongest candidate for each way this fault can begin on an Auseo refrigerator — and the remainder after them. Read the label, find the pattern that matches yours, and start there rather than at the top.
- Blocked condenser airflow or too little clearance around the cabinet — Why: A refrigerator cools by dumping heat into the room, and the only way it can do that is with air moving across the condenser coil. — Onset: Got worse gradually over weeks or months
- Ambient temperature outside the unit’s rated range — Why: Every refrigerator is rated for a room-temperature band. — Onset: Comes and goes with the weather or the room
- Sealed-system or compressor failure — Why: A lost refrigerant charge or a compressor that will not start produces the same warm cabinet, but nothing an owner can check will change it. — Onset: Started suddenly, between one use and the next
- Evaporator fan failed or obstructed — Why: The evaporator fan is what pushes cold air from the freezer side into the fresh-food compartment. When it stops, the freezer often still freezes while the refrigerator section climbs, which is why the two compartments disagree. — Onset: Got worse gradually over weeks or months
What to check, and in what order
- This order follows the onset groups above, so it is deliberately different from the companion page. Neither is wrong; they are two routes through one fault.
- Pin down when it started and whether it happens every time. — Why: A fault that appeared between one use and the next has a different cause set from one that crept up over months, and this answer alone removes most of the list.
- Confirm the unit actually has power and is calling for cooling — interior light on, display live, temperature set point where you think it is. — Why: It costs thirty seconds and it eliminates the entire electrical branch of the tree before you touch anything.
- Look at the condenser and the clearance around the cabinet before anything else. — Why: This is the most common cause in this class of appliance and the only one you can fix with a vacuum cleaner, so it goes first on pure expected value.
Checks you can safely do yourself
- Stop at the first step that would put a meter on live terminals.
- Read the temperature with an independent thermometer placed in a glass of water in the middle of the fresh-food section, left for several hours. Compare it against what the display claims. — Tools: Appliance or kitchen thermometer — Time: 5 minutes to set up, then wait
- Pull the unit out, unplug it, and vacuum the condenser coil and its fan; on a front-breathing or undercounter unit, remove the toe-kick grille and clear that instead. — Tools: Vacuum with a crevice tool, coil brush, screwdriver — Time: 20–30 minutes
- Restore the clearance the manual asks for at the back and sides, and make sure nothing is pushed up against the rear of the cabinet. — Tools: Tape measure
About 10 min
- Check every vent inside the cabinet is clear of packed food and that nothing is blocking the air path between the freezer and the fresh-food section. — Tools: None
About 10 min
Before you touch anything
Safety
A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below. — Id: fridge-40f A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below. — Id: freezer-0f
Unplug the unit or switch off its breaker before you pull any panel or reach behind the cabinet.
Where the owner checks end
Call a technician when one of these is true, and not before.
When the compressor is silent, or it hums and clicks off after a few seconds, every time. When the condenser stays cold after the unit has run for an hour, which points at a lost charge. When the evaporator fan is dead and the fan or its control has to be replaced behind the rear panel.
