Atvio EM Series Microwave is the scope of this page, and on it sparks, a trip or a burning smell points first at a damaged or dirty waveguide cover. The brand page puts metal in the cavity first; here it moves down, because what sits behind which panel on these models changes what is worth checking first. 4 of the 6 causes below can be checked without a tool; the rest need a technician.
What the machine is doing
- A breaker that trips when the machine starts — A real electrical fault, and repeated resetting is the wrong response.
- Sparks or arcing inside the cavity — Something in there is concentrating the field where it should not be.
- A burning or ozone smell during use — Stop and unplug. That is not a smell to investigate while the machine is running.
- Scorch marks on the cavity wall or the waveguide cover — A visible record of arcing that has already happened.
- A tingle from the cabinet or the door — Stop, unplug at once and do not use it again until a technician has seen it.
- NEAR MISS — no sparks, just cold food — That is a heating complaint, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first on the EM series
- A damaged or dirty waveguide cover — It is a small, cheap part and on many machines it is owner-replaceable, but only once the machine has been assessed if there is already damage.
- Metal in the cavity — Foil, a fork, a decorated plate or a twist tie all concentrate the field into an arc. It is first because it is the most common cause by a wide margin and it is entirely preventable.
- Damaged cavity paint or a rusted spot — A cavity that is rusting through is generally the end of the machine, and it is a safety matter rather than a cosmetic one.
- An overloaded or shared circuit — A microwave draws heavily on start. On a circuit shared with other kitchen loads, or through an extension lead, the breaker may trip for reasons outside the machine.
- A fault on the high-voltage side — There is no owner test for any of it, and the capacitor holds a lethal charge after the machine is unplugged.
- A damaged cord, plug or socket — A worn cord or a loose socket heats where it is loose, and that is where the burning smell comes from rather than from inside the machine.
What to check first, second, third
- Look at the waveguide cover for splatter, burn or a hole — A mark there names the cause of an arc immediately.
- Look into the cavity for metal, foil and decorated crockery — The most common cause, and it is visible without moving anything.
- Check the cavity for chipped paint or rust, particularly at the bottom — Arcing from a damaged cavity usually shows exactly where it happens.
- Feel the plug and socket for heat with the machine off — A loose connection heats, and that heat is the smell people report as coming from the machine.
- Stop there and call a technician — If there is no metal, no cover damage and no visible cavity damage, the fault is inside the cabinet and there is nothing an owner may check.
Before anything comes apart
Safety
Power off first, every time: unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before a panel is touched, because a capacitor can hold a charge long after the supply is gone. Nothing metal goes in the cavity, and nothing at all goes behind the outer case. Those are the two rules that matter most on this appliance. Leave every interlock and door switch exactly as you find it: each one cuts power to something for a reason.

When to call a technician
The line falls here: what you can see, reach and clear with the machine isolated is owner work; any work inside the case at all, because of the charge the capacitor holds is not. On this page that puts damaged cavity paint or a rusted spot on the far side of the line. Book the visit once you can describe what you have already eliminated, because that is what turns a diagnostic call into a repair call.
