The short answer
A new noise from a compact freezer points first at one thing: frozen packages shifting against the liner. Next on the list: the cabinet is rocking on an uneven floor. Almost everything here is the cabinet or its contents rather than the refrigeration, and the one service job sits at the bottom.
What you observe
- A sound the cabinet did not make when it was installed — Note whether it tracks the compressor, the lid, or your hand on the shell.
- The noise changed when the freezer was last restocked — Contents noise tracks the load, not the age of the machine.
- A knock or thump at the moment the machine starts — Start torque twists the cabinet and a loose foot lands.
- A buzz that stops when you lean on the cabinet — Only contact noise responds to pressure.
- NEAR MISS — a gurgle or soft crackle after the compressor stops — That is refrigerant settling and the liner changing temperature. Normal.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Frozen packages shifting against the liner — First on this cabinet because a utility corner, packed solid and rarely emptied means it is packed solid. A compressor puts a low vibration into the whole shell, stacked packages pick it up, and the buzz that results is the load rather than the machine.
- The cabinet is rocking on an uneven floor — Ranked here because it is free to correct and it is the commonest noise complaint on a light cabinet.
- A rear panel or a pipe buzzing against the shell — Ranked here because contact noise should always be eliminated before a component is blamed.
- The thermostat and overload clicking on each cycle — Last, and reassuring more often than not — the pattern tells you which it is.
Check in this order, and why
- Unload the top layer and listen to the cabinet again — If the noise changes with the load, it is the load.
- Push the top corners and feel for rock — A cabinet that moves under a hand knocks at every start.
- Press each panel in turn while it runs — A buzz that stops under your hand is contact, nothing more.
- Note whether each click is followed by a run — Click then run is normal; click, pause, click is the overload.
What an owner can safely check
- Work out whether the noise tracks the compressor, the lid or your hand — Three sources, three fixes, and nothing else helps until you know which.

- Unload the top layer and run the cabinet for a cycle — Reload a layer at a time until it returns.

- Level the cabinet and wind the feet down until it cannot rock — Check all four corners.

- STOP HERE if the noise survives every check above — A bearing or a compressor mount means the assembly comes out. Service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the walls of the cabinet. Refrigerant tubing runs inside those panels and a puncture scraps the freezer outright — let it melt with the door open instead.
When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet is level, the panels are secure and the load is not the culprit, and a rumble or whirr is still there. That combination means a mount or a bearing. Call urgently if the noise arrived alongside softening contents, because then it is not a noise complaint at all. Call immediately if you hear metal grinding on metal.
