The short answer
On a compact refrigerator, a cabinet that runs and still will not hold temperature points first at one thing: the cabinet is out of level after being moved. Next on the list: a frost blanket over the cold plate. The checks that matter most need no tools; the sealed system is the only part that is not owner work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the machine is clearly running — Work is going in and no cold is coming out.
- The door swings back open unless you push it — The cabinet is leaning forward, so gravity is working against the latch.
- A thick white crust has built on the cold plate — Frost is an insulator, so the thicker it is the less the plate can absorb.
- Condensation or frost gathers near one edge of the door — Room air entering at a gap gives up its moisture the moment it cools.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start-relay fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The cabinet is out of level after being moved — First on this unit, because it lives in a dorm room, a study or an office, and it gets carried between them.
- A frost blanket over the cold plate — Ranked here because every manual-defrost cabinet ices up eventually, and frost insulates the cold plate rather than helping it.
- The door gasket is no longer sealing — Ranked here because a leaking seal never announces itself; it simply makes the compressor run and run.

Check in this order, and why

- Run the paper test around all four sides of the door — A sheet that slides out freely anywhere is a leak you can feel.
- Find and inspect the condenser coil — A grey felt across the fins is the commonest cause of poor cooling anywhere.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the cold plate. The refrigerant tubing runs inside that plate and a puncture scraps the cabinet outright — let it melt instead.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and door checks above are clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining causes are behind a panel or inside the sealed system. Call sooner if the compressor runs without a break: a cabinet that never reaches temperature works far harder than a healthy one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil anywhere near the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
