The short answer

What you observe
- The contents are soft when they should be hard — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
- It has not pulled down properly since it was last moved — The timing points at the move, not at a part.
- A thick crust of ice on the walls or the base — Past a light dusting, frost is costing you capacity.
- The door looks shut and the cabinet behaves as if it is open — A seal standing proud leaks exactly like a torn one.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold at all — That is a no-power or start-relay fault rather than a cooling fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The cabinet has been moved and not left to settle — First on this unit, because it lives in a spare room or a landing, and it is moved more often than a full-size unit and gets carried between rooms.
- Frost has built up over the cold surfaces — Ranked here because every manual freezer ices up eventually and the fix is housekeeping rather than a part.
- Debris in the gasket channel is holding the seal off — Ranked here because a deep gasket profile hides its own contamination while the door looks perfectly shut.
- The condenser is blanketed with dust — Last, and worth doing anyway while the cabinet is pulled out.
Check in this order, and why
- Ask whether the cabinet was tipped or laid down recently — Oil in the wrong place after a move mimics a failing compressor.
- Look at how thick the frost is on the walls — Frost is an insulator, so the more of it there is the worse the cabinet works.
- Run a finger inside the gasket channel all the way round — Grit in the channel holds the seal off invisibly.
- Find the condenser and check it for dust — A freezer feels a dirty coil sooner than a refrigerator does.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the walls of the cabinet. Refrigerant tubing runs inside those panels and a puncture scraps the freezer outright — let it melt with the door open instead.
When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the frost and the condenser are all clear and the cabinet still will not hold hard frozen. At that point the remaining causes need a meter. Call urgently rather than waiting if the cabinet is full — you are on a clock that has nothing to do with the repair. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil near the compressor.
