The short answer
Water at a front-load washer comes down to one thing more often than any other: the dispenser drawer is blocked and overflowing. Next on the list: the door bellows is torn or fouled. When the water appears — at fill, during the wash, at drain, or with the machine idle — narrows this faster than any tool will.
What you observe
- Water on the floor around the machine — When it appears matters more than how much there is.
- Water runs down the outside front of the machine — A drawer overflow runs outside the cabinet; a bellows leak does not.
- Water appears at the front of the machine during the wash — Only the bellows leaks at the door while the drum turns.
- The water is foamy rather than clear — Foam on the floor is a dosing answer, not a plumbing one.
- NEAR MISS — the water is foamy rather than clear — That is a detergent dose, not a plumbing fault.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The dispenser drawer is blocked and overflowing — First here because the drawer is the one water path that is open to the room. Congealed softener narrows the siphon, incoming water backs up over the lip, and it runs down the front of the machine looking exactly like a door leak.
- The door bellows is torn or fouled — Ranked here because the bellows is the part that wears fastest on any front-loader and the only one that leaks intermittently by nature.
- Too much detergent is making suds that climb out — Ranked here because it is free to test and it explains a leak that comes and goes with the wash load.
- An inlet hose connection is weeping — Last, and diagnosed by drying the area and watching whether it returns with the machine idle.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the dispenser drawer right out and look at the housing — Congealed softener in the siphon is visible immediately.
- Pull the lower fold of the bellows open and look inside — Grit sits in the fold and a split hides underneath it.
- Run a wash with a much smaller detergent dose — A machine that stops leaking on a small dose was never faulty.
- Dry behind the machine and check with the machine idle — Pressurised water returns with the machine switched off.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and turn off the supply taps before touching a hose. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never force or bridge the door interlock: it exists to stop a drum turning with the door open, and a slim cabinet puts your hand very close to it.
When to call a technician
Call once the bellows, the drawer and the dose are all ruled out and water is still arriving, or as soon as the water is behind the machine and refilling after you mop it. Mains-pressure water does not stop on its own. Call immediately if water is reaching the outlet or running under an adjoining appliance.
