The short version
On the Ariston ARWL washer line, water that will not drain is worth working through in a set order: a jammed impeller or a blocked pump housing first, then a lid switch or door lock blocking the drain and spin step, and only after those does the work that needs a meter or a teardown enter the picture. That order is written for a one-cabinet line and sequenced for how these models are put together, which is where it departs from the brand-generic article.
What the machine is doing
- A buzz at the drain step with no water moving — Sound without flow means the motor is trying and the impeller is not turning.
- The wash finishes but the machine never drains or spins — A cycle that stops exactly at the drain and spin step points at the interlock.
- NEAR MISS — the machine never filled properly either — Then the cycle stalled before draining and the cycle-fault page is the better starting point.
What it usually turns out to be, in order on the ARWL line
- The pump impeller is jammed or the pump housing is blocked — Ranked first: behind the filter sits the impeller itself, and a sock, a wire or a build-up of hair wrapped around it will hold it still while the motor buzzes — the noise is the give-away, because a pump that is silent is a different fault entirely.
- The lid switch or door lock is preventing the drain and spin step — An unconfirmed lid or door leaves the machine unable to run its drain and spin step, which reads as a drainage fault.
- The drain hose is kinked, too high, or pushed too far into the standpipe — The drain hose is crushed or badly positioned often enough that it is worth checking before anything is opened.
- The pump filter or coin trap is blocked — The filter is still worth opening whatever else is suspected, because a technician will open it first too.
- The drain pump motor or its control — Last here, and the only cause on this list that is not owner work — a pump that is silent at the drain step, with a clean filter and a free impeller, has lost its motor or its supply — and that is diagnosed with a meter on live terminals.
The order of checks, and the reason for it
- With the power off, reach into the filter housing and turn the impeller by hand — It should spin freely; resistance or something wrapped around it is your answer. Done first because it separates the likeliest causes before any tool is needed.
- Close the lid or door firmly and listen for the lock or switch — Second: it confirms or dismisses what the first check suggested.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose along its whole run — Third, once the two checks above are clean.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the filter or removing a panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Bail the drum down with a jug before you open the filter if the machine is full, because everything in it will come out at floor level. Never reach into a filter housing with the power on.
