The short answer

What you observe
- A squeal at start-up that fades once the drum is turning — Noise tied to acceleration rather than to speed points at the drive.
- A regular tap or clink once per drum turn — A repeating rhythm tied to rotation is an object, not a bearing.
- NEAR MISS — the clothes are also coming out damp — Noise with poor drying points at airflow and the vent, and the heating page is the better starting point.
Causes, most likely first on the ARWDF line
- The drive belt or the idler pulley — Ranked first: the belt wraps the whole drum and runs over a spring-loaded idler, and a squeal that appears on start-up and settles once the drum is turning is that pulley rather than anything to do with the drum itself.
- Something loose in the drum, the lint area or a pocket — Something loose in the drum or the lint area makes a regular tap and is the cheapest cause to rule out.

- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and listen — Then pull the lint screen and look into its housing with a torch. Second: it confirms or dismisses what the first check suggested.
- Spin the empty drum by hand and feel for roughness or drop — A drum that does not turn smoothly by hand has a support problem. Third, once the two checks above are clean.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a gas dryer, do not disturb the burner or its supply line; if you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
