The short answer
An icemaker that has stopped is nearly always missing water, too warm, or switched off by its own arm. Check the shut-off arm and the freezer temperature before assuming the icemaker has failed.
What you actually see and hear
- No ice at all and the mould is dry — No water arriving. A closed valve, a kinked pipe or an ice plug.
- Hollow or partly formed cubes — Too little water per fill, or a freezer running slightly warm.
- A solid block instead of cubes — The mould is overfilling or the harvest is not happening.
- Ice forming very slowly — The freezer is not cold enough to freeze the mould promptly.
- NEAR MISS - cubes taste stale after a holiday — Old ice absorbing odours, not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Shut-off arm lifted or the icemaker switched off — First, because it happens constantly and it is free to fix. A tall packet lifts the arm and the icemaker stops obediently.
- Water supply closed, kinked or frozen — Second. The pipe is narrow and a slightly warm freezer will plug it with ice.
- Freezer running warmer than zero degrees Fahrenheit — Third. The mould will not freeze properly and the cubes come out hollow or slow.
- Inlet valve or its filter restricted — Fourth. Flow drops and the fill never completes.
- Fill tube frozen at the mould — Fifth, and it recurs unless the freezer temperature is fixed too.
- Icemaker module or its thermostat — Last, and it is what remains when the water and the temperature are right.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the shut-off arm and any icemaker switch — The most common cause and the fastest check.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer — Warmer than zero degrees Fahrenheit explains slow or hollow cubes.
- Check the supply tap behind the cabinet is open — It gets closed during cleaning and never reopened.
- Look at the pipe behind the cabinet for kinks — Pushing the fridge back against it is common.
What an owner can safely check
- Lower the shut-off arm and clear anything stacked against it — Free, instant, and it fixes a large share of these.
About 5 min
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read after a day — Zero degrees Fahrenheit or below is what the mould needs.
Tools: thermometerAbout 1440 min
- Open the supply tap fully and straighten the pipe — Pull the cabinet out gently rather than dragging it.
Tools: torchAbout 25 min
- Discard the first batches after any work on the water side — Old ice and disturbed pipework both taste of it.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE before removing the icemaker or working on the inlet valve — That is water plus live electrics behind the cabinet.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The defrost heater and live terminals sit behind the rear panel inside the freezer compartment, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never melt frost with a heat gun or a naked flame, and never chip at ice with a metal tool near the liner or the tubing behind it.
When to call a technician
Call when the arm is down, the tap is open, the pipe is straight and the freezer sits at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below but the mould stays dry - that points at the inlet valve or the module. Call promptly for water appearing under the cabinet, because a leaking supply connection quietly damages the floor. Do not call before checking the arm and the temperature: those two account for most stopped icemakers.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the top-freezer refrigerator class, not for one family or model line. Where a brand- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and it is linked above, so go there first if your machine is named. What is deliberately not here: fan and damper part numbers, thermistor values, refrigerant charge and shelf dimensions, all of which differ by family and belong on the page for that family.
