The short answer
A frost-free upright has a fan, a heater and a defrost control, so it makes sounds a chest freezer cannot. The fan stopping when you open the door is the most useful test there is - it identifies the source in one second.
What you actually see and hear
- A whirr that stops when the door is opened — The evaporator fan, identified by the door switch.
- A click every few hours, sometimes followed by a hiss — The defrost cycle. Normal and frequently mistaken for a fault.
- A loud rhythmic buzzing from inside the cabinet — A fan blade striking ice - a genuine fault and a warning.
- A drone that changes when you press on the cabinet — Vibration into a hard floor. Not a fault.
- Clicking with no sustained run — The start circuit, and with a full freezer that is urgent.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Evaporator fan striking frost — First on a frost-free cabinet. When the defrost system falls behind, ice forms where the blade turns, and the noise is loud, rhythmic and unmistakable.
- Fan motor bearing — Second. It runs whenever the cabinet cools, which is most of the time in a full freezer.
- Normal defrost sounds — Third, and they need recognising rather than repairing - a click, a hiss and a trickle several times a day.
- Floor coupling and levelling — Fourth. Upright freezers usually live on hard floors in garages and utility rooms.
- Loose rear pan or tubing contact — Fifth. It buzzes only while the compressor runs.
- Start relay or compressor — Last, and the one that puts the contents at risk.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door with the noise happening — If it stops, it is the evaporator fan.
- Note whether the noise is rhythmic and loud or a steady whirr — Rhythmic buzzing usually means a blade striking ice.
- Press a hand on the cabinet — A noise that changes under your hand is vibration.
- Listen for click-pause-click — With a full freezer, that is urgent.

Do not call for the defrost click or the hiss: that is a healthy frost-free cabinet working as designed.
