The short answer
On the ASXS family the brand-generic advice to listen at the back holds, but it is the wrong place to start on this roster. These listings put a fan behind the freezer liner as well as one at the condenser, so a noise that changes when the freezer door is opened is telling you more than any amount of listening at the back panel will. How it presents
- A buzz or rattle that stops when the freezer door is opened — The freezer-side fan is switched by the door, so the door itself is a free diagnostic. This one tell separates the two likeliest causes before any tool comes out.
- A chirp or squeal that builds over weeks — A dry fan bearing announces itself slowly. It is loudest when the cabinet has been closed for a while and the fan is running hardest.
- NEAR MISS - a loud hum with no cooling at all — That is a start-relay or compressor fault and it belongs on the cooling page for this family, not here.
What it usually turns out to be
- Ice or debris contacting the evaporator fan blade — Placed first because the door test confirms or eliminates it in seconds, which no other cause on this list can claim. Ice growing out from the coil area into the blade path is slow, silent and invisible until a panel comes off.
- Evaporator or condenser fan bearing wear — A dry bearing chirps first and squeals later, and it does it continuously rather than in bursts. It is second on this roster because the part is cheap but reaching the freezer-side one means pulling a liner panel with the cabinet emptied.
- Hardened compressor mounting grommets — The rubber isolators under the compressor harden with age and stop absorbing a vibration that was always present. Nothing has failed; the cabinet has simply stopped hiding it.
- Compressor or sealed-system fault — Ranked last because it is both the least common finding and the most expensive, which is exactly the combination that makes a wrong guess costly. Get the cause named before deciding anything.
- Body: This order differs from the brand-generic one in a single place: levelling and loading move above the condenser fan. On the ASXS roster the machine compartment is closed enough that lint takes years to matter, while a rocking cabinet makes noise on day one.
Diagnostic order on these models
- Clear the top and sides of the cabinet — Remove anything resting on the unit and pull it clear of adjacent cabinets, then listen again before going further.
- Note whether the noise is constant or in bursts — Constant points at a bearing; bursts at the start of a run point at an obstruction that clears itself.
- Body: This order exists because of where the ASXS listings put things. The door-switched fan gives you a free test, so it goes first; the machine compartment needs the unit pulled out, so it goes later.

When to stop and call
Call once the free checks are clean and the noise is still freezer-side, because reaching the evaporator fan on the ASXS roster means emptying the cabinet and removing a liner panel with sharp fins behind it. Call immediately if the noise came with a cabinet that is no longer holding temperature, or if you can smell anything hot from the machine compartment.
