What the water is telling you
On the ABMW roster the defrost drain is the fault that produces most leak calls. Meltwater from the coil is meant to run out through a small drain to a pan over the compressor; when that path glazes over with ice the water backs up into the cabinet instead. The roster covers four listings, ABMW141E, ABMW170E and ABMW171E, plus the starred variants of those numbers shown in the table below.
How it presents
- Ice building on the floor of the freezer compartment — The same blocked drain seen one stage earlier, before enough water accumulates to reach the fresh-food side.
- A steady wet patch at the back low down — Constant water points at the supply line, a compression fitting or the inlet valve rather than at the defrost side.
- NEAR MISS - an oily film rather than clear water — Oil in the machine compartment means the sealed system is open. Stop, do not run the unit, and call.
What it usually turns out to be
- Blocked or frozen defrost drain — First because the drain is narrow, cold along its whole length and sits at the lowest point of a compartment that holds food. Everything about its design makes it the thing that blocks.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — The pan under the machine compartment evaporates what the drain delivers. A pan knocked out of position when the unit was moved, or cracked with age, puts that water straight onto the floor.
- Ice maker fill tube or valve dribbling — At this position because it produces ice before it produces water, so a sheet under the bin is the early warning for a puddle that has not arrived yet.
- Condensation from ambient humidity or a blocked air path — The entry that explains water in a cabinet where everything checks out. It rises and falls with the weather, which is a signature none of the mechanical causes share.
- Body: Ordered by what gets found rather than by what owners suspect. Condensation and door sealing sit high because they produce water in the same places as a real leak and cost nothing to rule out.
Diagnostic order on these models
- Dry everything and watch the timing for a day — Water hours after a defrost points at the drain; constant water points at the supply; water after an ice cycle points at the fill path.
- Pull the crisper drawers and look at the liner floor — Standing water under the drawers with a dry floor outside is a blocked drain until proved otherwise.
- Check above and behind the appliance, not just under it — A dripping pipe or fitting above the unit lands behind it and looks exactly like an appliance leak.
- Body: Work from where the water is back towards where it came from. On the ABMW listings there are only three sources, and each announces itself in a different place.

Dry the floor before you begin and keep it dry: water beside a live appliance is a slip risk and a shock risk at once. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before clearing a drain or removing a panel, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water shut-off before touching any fitting.

When to call a technician
The owner line on this roster is the fitting and the liner panel. Clearing a drain from the cabinet side, checking seals, repositioning a pan and drying a floor are owner work. Opening a pressurised supply line or removing the rear liner to reach the drain heater is not.
