What this means on this family
Most noises from the ARB family come from three moving parts and one stationary one: two fans, a compressor, and the cabinet itself resonating against whatever it stands on. This family is one model number, which makes the scope of this page unusually clear. Identifying which of those is speaking is a matter of where the sound is and when it happens, not of taking anything apart.
What you observe
- Gurgling, boiling or a trickle after the unit stops — Refrigerant settling and melt water running to the drain. Normal on every refrigerator, and the most commonly reported non-fault.
- A single loud bang or knock at long intervals — Thermal movement of the liner or a duct, usually around a defrost cycle. It sounds alarming and is not.
- Squealing or scraping that follows the fan speed — A bearing on its way out or a blade fouling its shroud. This one is a part, and it will get worse.
- A loud buzz or rattle from the back that stops when you touch the cabinet — Resonance, not a failing part. Something at the back is vibrating against the cabinet or the wall.
- NEAR MISS — a hiss or a smell with the noise — Stop and isolate the cabinet. Anything that sounds like escaping gas or smells burnt is not an ordinary noise complaint.
Ranked causes for these models
- Evaporator fan fouling ice — First on the ARB family. Ice builds where the air is coldest and the fan is right there, so the blade starts to catch it at the tips. The noise is rhythmic, it changes with the door open, and it stops entirely after a defrost — which is how it identifies itself.
- Condenser fan obstruction — Second, and it is the one that is easy to confirm: with the power off, the blade can be turned by hand and anything fouling it is visible with a torch.
- A fan bearing that is wearing out — Third. A bearing produces a squeal or a grind that follows the fan and gets worse in a predictable way. It is a genuine part failure, which is why it sits below the two causes that are free to fix.
- The compressor and how it is mounted — Fourth. It explains a machine that has grown louder without any change in how it cools.
- Cabinet contact and levelling — Last, but check it early because it takes a minute: lean on each corner in turn and listen for the noise to change.
Check in this order, and why
- Time the noise against the cooling cycle — Constant, only while running, or only just after stopping — each points at a different group of causes.
- Check the freezer section for frost near the fan — A rhythmic tick with visible ice is the diagnosis complete.
- Clear the ice and run the cabinet for a day — If the noise returns with the ice, the defrost system is the subject and not the fan.
- Check the back for debris around the lower fan — Power off, torch, and turn the blade by hand to feel for roughness.
- Judge the compressor last and only with its mounts — A noisy compressor with normal cooling is usually a mounting complaint, not a compressor one.

Power off at the plug or the breaker before the back of the cabinet is touched. Do not hold the door switch to watch the internal fan run with a hand inside the compartment. Moving the cabinet to reach the back is a two-person job on the larger models in this family. A noise complaint on its own does not put food at risk, but check the temperature while you are there: a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
