The observations that separate this fault from its neighbours
- Water on the floor at the back — Points at the back of the machine: the drain tube exit, the evaporation tray, or a supply fitting on a plumbed cabinet.
- Water on the floor at the front — It has run forward along the cabinet base. On these models that usually means the drain tray or the drain path rather than a supply connection.
- A musty smell before any water was noticed — Water standing where it should not has been there a while. The smell usually arrives before the puddle does.
- A sheet of ice under the drawers rather than water — The same blockage in a colder cabinet. It freezes where it collects, and it will thaw into a floor leak the moment the machine is switched off.

- Level the cabinet front to back and side to side — A cabinet that leans sends interior water to the wrong place and turns a small pan leak into a visible one.
- Close the water shut-off for a day if the cabinet is plumbed — A leak that stops with the valve closed is a supply leak, and that is the one that needs attention today.

Power off first — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off — and water off before any connection is opened. Close the water shut-off before a fitting is disturbed. Mop the floor before moving the machine, because a loaded refrigerator on a wet floor moves further than expected and these cabinets are heavy enough to need two people. If the leak came with a warm cabinet, judge the food by temperature rather than by the puddle: a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
