The short answer
On the ACFRF family, a cabinet that runs but will not hold temperature usually comes down to stalled defrost. The quickest way to place it is to look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet. Two of the four causes below are owner-checkable in minutes; the rest are where a service call starts.
What you observe
- The outside of the cabinet is hot to the touch at the sides or back — That surface is part of how many compact cabinets shed heat, so warm is normal; too hot to leave a hand on, with no clearance behind, is not.
- The cabinet is warm and the unit is clearly running — You can hear the compressor working, but the air inside never gets properly cold and food in the door warms first.
- The compressor runs and never cycles off — A healthy unit stops for a while once it reaches temperature.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is silent and nothing inside is cold — Nothing running at all is a power, start-relay or control fault, and that is a different page from this one.
Causes, most likely first
- Stalled defrost, with the evaporator iced over — It ranks here because the failure is gradual: the defrost cycle weakens long before it stops, the evaporator collects ice over weeks, and the owner notices a warm cabinet rather than the ice that caused it.
- Condenser coil blocked, or starved of clearance — It ranks high here because it is the one cause the owner creates and the owner can undo: a cabinet pushed back against a wall, into a cupboard, or against a heat source loses its ability to dump heat.
- Evaporator fan not moving air — It moves up on an older roster, where bearings have had the running hours to dry out, and it is the cause that most often hides behind a defrost fault that was never fixed.
- Sealed system or compressor fault — It is last because it is genuinely the least common of the causes on this list, and because every cause above it is cheaper to find and cheaper to fix.
- Body: A few rows in the list carry a placeholder in place of a finish code, which is how the manufacturer's own list handles a cabinet offered in several colours. That order is the brand-generic order for this symptom, because nothing in how this line is built moves any of these causes past another.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — A solid sheet where the cold air leaves the freezer confirms the airflow path is blocked before any tool comes out.
- Feel the back or the side panel while the unit is running — Warm is right; scorching, with no clearance behind and a dusty coil, is the answer.
- Listen at the freezer with the door switch held in — Air noise that stops when you release the switch means the fan is alive; silence with the switch held is the fan.
- Body: The order follows the ranking above rather than the layout of the cabinet: each check either confirms the cause above it or removes it, and they are arranged so that the free checks come before anything that needs the unit moved or a panel off. Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and leave it off while you work. A capacitor near the compressor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start components sit at mains voltage within reach of a hand that goes looking behind the lower panel.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner checks above are clean: seal checked, coil cleared, clearance given, a full defrost tried, and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. Call sooner if the fan is silent behind the freezer panel or the compressor starts and stops within seconds, because both of those need a meter on live terminals and that is where an owner check ends.
