What this usually is
On the HS family, a cabinet that is putting water where it should not be usually comes down to defrost drain blocked or frozen. The first check that pays is this one: find the drain hole at the base of the evaporator area and look at it. Every cause below is owner-checkable before anything is dismantled.
The symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- A wet patch that appears once a day and dries — Anything on a daily rhythm is tied to the defrost cycle, which runs on a timer rather than on demand.
- Water only after the cabinet was moved or loaded — Tilting a cabinet moves where the melt water runs, and a drain pan knocked out of its rails empties onto the floor.
- A steady drip rather than a pool — A drip that continues regardless of the cooling cycle points at a supply connection, which is the one leak that does not stop on its own.
- NEAR MISS: water that appears only when the ice maker fills — A fill that overshoots is an ice maker fault, and the ice page for this line is where it is handled.
Causes in order of likelihood here
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen — It is the leading cause on a two-compartment cabinet in particular, where the drain path from the freezer evaporator to the pan is long, narrow and easy to block.
- Door seal letting warm humid air in — Warm air carries moisture, and every litre of it that leaks past a tired seal leaves its water behind inside the cabinet as condensation or as frost that later melts.
- Drain pan displaced, cracked or overflowing — It ranks here because it explains the leaks that appear at the back of the cabinet, and because it is so often the consequence of the cabinet being moved rather than of anything ageing.
- Cabinet not level, tilting the water the wrong way — On a light cabinet a soft floor covering under one corner is enough to change the angle, which is why this is worth two minutes before anything else is opened.
- Body: Two rows in the list differ only by a trailing letter, which in this family marks paired cabinets intended to stand side by side, so a fault reported on one of a pair is worth checking on both. That order is the brand-generic order for this symptom, because nothing in how this line is built moves any of these causes past another.
The diagnostic order
- Find the drain hole at the base of the evaporator area and look at it — A plug of ice or a dark deposit in the hole is the answer, and the water on the floor is simply what could not get past it.
- Run a paper strip around the whole door frame — Close the door on it and pull: anywhere it slides out freely, warm air is going in at that point all day.
- Look under the back of the cabinet at the pan — Water on the deck beside the pan, or a pan sitting off its rails, is visible in a few seconds with a torch.
- Body: The order follows the ranking above rather than the layout of the cabinet: each check either confirms the cause above it or removes it, and they are arranged so that the free checks come before anything that needs the unit moved or a panel off. When this becomes a service call
