The short answer
On the REF family, a cabinet that runs but will not hold temperature usually comes down to condenser coil blocked. The quickest way to place it is to feel the back or the side panel while the unit is running.
What you observe
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Not the light dusting that comes and goes, but a solid white sheet that grows back within a day of being scraped off.
- The freezer side is cold and the fresh-food side is not — On a two-compartment cabinet the cold is made in one place and moved to the other, so this split points at airflow rather than at cooling.
- Food near the vent is frozen while the rest is warm — Uneven cold is a distribution symptom, not a lost-refrigerant symptom, and it usually means air is being blocked or dumped in the wrong place.
- NEAR MISS: the unit is silent and nothing inside is cold — Nothing running at all is a power, start-relay or control fault, and that is a different page from this one.
Causes, most likely first
- Condenser coil blocked, or starved of clearance — Compact and under-counter cabinets carry their condenser at the back or in the side wall with very little air gap, so dust and a tight installation cost them cooling faster than they cost a full-size unit.
- Stalled defrost, with the evaporator iced over — This ranks high on a cabinet that still hums and still frosts: airflow across an iced evaporator collapses, so the compressor keeps running while the cold never reaches the shelves.
- Evaporator fan not moving air — It moves up on an older roster, where bearings have had the running hours to dry out, and it is the cause that most often hides behind a defrost fault that was never fixed.
- Sealed system or compressor fault — It is last because it is genuinely the least common of the causes on this list, and because every cause above it is cheaper to find and cheaper to fix.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner checks above are clean: seal checked, coil cleared, clearance given, a full defrost tried, and the cabinet still will not hold temperature.
