The short answer
These units have no ice maker: freezing means setting a zone cold enough and using a tray. The real constraint is the battery, because holding a freezing setting costs far more run time than chilling does, especially in a warm place.
What you actually see and hear
- The pack empties far faster at a freezing setting — Expected. Freezing keeps the compressor running much more of the time.
- A zone will not reach freezing in a hot environment — Ambient limits what any light-walled cooler can achieve.
- Contents against the cold wall freeze while the rest does not — One cooling plate serving the whole cabinet.
- Both zones behave alike on a dual-zone model — The divider is not seated.
- NEAR MISS - looking for automatic ice — There is no ice maker and no water connection in a unit of this kind.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Battery run time at a freezing setting — First, and it is the defining constraint of a battery cooler. What looks like a failure to freeze is very often the pack running out before the cabinet gets there.
- Ambient temperature — Second. A cooler pulls a certain amount below the air around it, and in a hot vehicle or a sunny campsite that ceiling is real.
- Contents touching the cooling plate — Third. That surface is far colder than the setpoint, so items against it freeze whether you wanted them to or not.
- Zone settings competing on one compressor — Fourth, on dual-zone models: a very cold setting on one zone limits the other.
- Lid seal and how often it is opened — Fifth. Every opening in warm air costs cold and adds frost.
- Sensor or controller fault — Last, and it is what remains when everything else is accounted for.
Check in this order, and why
- Note what the pack does at a freezing setting versus a chilling one — The difference is the single most useful measurement you can make.
- Measure the ambient temperature where the unit is standing — It sets the ceiling on what is achievable.
- Look at what is packed against the cold wall — It explains most unwanted freezing.
- Check the divider is seated on a dual-zone model — A loose divider merges the two spaces.
What an owner can safely check
- Run the unit on mains at a freezing setting and see whether it gets there — Separates the cooling capability from the battery question.
Tools: thermometerAbout 360 min
- Pre-freeze contents before loading where you can — Far cheaper in battery terms than freezing them in the cabinet.
About 15 min
- Move contents a finger's width off the cooling wall — Stops unwanted freezing and improves circulation.
About 10 min
- Shade the unit and clear both vents — Ambient is the ceiling, and shade lowers it.
About 10 min
- Reseat the divider and clean the lid seal — Both quick, and both change what the zones can do.

- STOP HERE if it will not freeze on mains in a cool room — That points at the controller or the sealed system.

Safety
Charge and store the battery pack within the temperature range the manufacturer gives, and stop using a pack that is swollen, damaged or hot to the touch - a lithium pack that has been abused is a fire risk rather than a performance problem. Use the supplied charger and leads. Keep the vents clear, and do not run the unit in a sealed boot where its own heat has nowhere to go.
When to call a technician
Contact the supplier if the unit cannot reach a freezing setting on mains power in a cool room with the cabinet empty - that is a capability question rather than a battery one. Everything else here is physics and planning: pre-freeze what you can, shade the unit, keep the lid shut, and expect a freezing setting to cost several times the run time that a chilling setting does.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the battery-powered portable cooler class, not for one family or model line. Where a brand- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and it is linked above, so go there first if your machine is named. What is deliberately not here: battery capacity figures, compressor and controller part numbers, charge and cut-out thresholds and case dimensions, all of which differ by family and belong on the page for that family.
