What E62 means
E62 means the control board reads the oven sensor circuit as shorted, so it no longer has a believable temperature. Stop cooking with the oven until E62 is resolved, because the control cannot regulate heat on a reading it rejects.

| E62 | The Oven Sensor circuit reported a shorted condition to the control board. There may a problem with the Sensor, the Appliance Control Board, or the associated wiring. |
What the oven does alongside E62
- E62 with bake and broil refusing to heat — The control cancels heating on the shorted reading.
- The code first appeared after a self-clean — The hottest cycle the oven runs is the one most likely to finish off a tired sensor or lead.
- Lead insulation that looks glossy, cracked or brown — Heat-damaged insulation is a short waiting to happen.
- NEAR MISS: smoke from food residue with no code — Residue burning off is normal after spills; E62 is about the sensor circuit, not the smoke.
What triggers E62, most likely first
- A sensor shorted internally — First: the element degrades with years of heat cycling, and a self-clean often pushes a marginal one over the edge.
- Insulation melted where the lead passes the cavity wall — Second: the hottest point on the lead takes the most punishment.
- A harness pinched behind the range — Third: wiring trapped against the wall or a panel edge when the range was pushed back.
- The Appliance Control Board — Last: a failed input can read a sound sensor as shorted, but only once everything else is ruled out.
Check order for E62, and why
- Inspect the lead where it enters the cavity wall — Cheap and visual; damage here usually settles the question.
- Reset and see whether E62 is immediate — A short present the moment power returns is hard, not heat-dependent.
- Unplug the sensor and measure it, power off — A shorted probe condemns the sensor; a good one moves the search to the harness.
- Check the harness to the board — Done by a technician with the range pulled out.
Reset and owner-safe checks
- Check the visible lead, power off — With the oven cold, look where the lead meets the wall for glossy, cracked or browned insulation.

- Reset at the breaker — Off for a minute, on again; note whether E62 returns at once or only after the oven heats.
Tools: breaker panel accessAbout 5 min
- Measure the sensor with a meter — Remove the mounting screws, ease the sensor forward, unplug it and read its resistance; a reading near zero confirms a shorted probe.
Tools: multimeter, screwdriverAbout 15 min
- Skip self-clean until it is fixed — Clean-cycle heat can turn a marginal short into a damaged harness.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Switch off the breaker or unplug the range before removing the sensor screws or any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Take sensor readings with the power off and the sensor unplugged, never on live terminals. On a gas range, if you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When E62 needs a technician
Call if the sensor measures normal but E62 persists, if the lead is damaged inside the wall where you cannot reach it, or if the code followed a self-clean and the range needs pulling out. A shorted harness must be traced end to end, and the board is tested only after that.

Which models this reading covers
This reading of E62 applies to Amana ovens whose control reports the oven sensor circuit as shorted, as the table states. It does not cover a meat probe or other sensors, or controls that use other code formats; a model-specific page, where one exists, is the better guide. None is listed for E62 yet, so use the Amana oven code index below.
