The short answer

What you observe
- The drum is full of water at the end of the cycle — Clothes soaking, machine silent, nothing having happened.
- The machine drains but takes far longer than it used to — A partial blockage rather than a complete one, and it will finish becoming complete.
- Water backs up out of the standpipe — That points away from the machine and at the house drain.
- NEAR MISS — water on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak, and it is covered on the leak page for this appliance.
Causes, most likely first on the NTW line
- Suds preventing the pump priming — Ranked first here — it is a dosing problem rather than a mechanical one, and it is fixed without opening anything.
- A drain hose set low enough to siphon — Second here — it produces the opposite complaint — water leaving continuously — and it has to be distinguished early.
- A non-return ball stuck in its seat — Third here — it is uncommon and because the checks it shares a panel with are made anyway.

Check in this order, and why
- Look through the door for foam standing above the water — Foam that survives a drain attempt is what is stopping the pump pulling.
- Check the height of the hose where it enters the standpipe — A hose that runs below the drum level will empty the machine as fast as it fills.
- Leave this to the filter inspection — The ball sits in the same housing, so it is looked at when the trap is out rather than as a separate job.
- Body: These models differ in size, so the same component is not in the same place on every one of them. The checks below are in the same order as the causes above them, so a clean result sends you one step further down rather than back to the top.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut both taps and lay towels and a shallow tray before opening a pump filter: a stalled machine may hold a full drum, and it comes out faster than a bowl will take. Do not force a locked door with water behind it, and keep the floor dry while the machine is plugged in.

When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clear, the hose run is straight, the standpipe drains and the machine still will not empty — at that point the pump or the sump hose is the answer, and both need the machine opened. Call at once if water is reaching a socket or an extension lead.
