The short answer
Amana AZB cabinets leak at the defrost drain far more often than anywhere else. The model matrix on this page lists two model numbers under this family badge. The drain carries debris-laden melt water through the coldest part of the appliance on every cycle, which is exactly the recipe for a tube that silts and then freezes shut.
Where the water shows up
- A sheet of ice on the freezer floor — Ice under the bottom basket builds in layers, one defrost cycle at a time.
- Water at the front of the floor, usually after a cycle — A puddle that returns hours after being mopped tracks the defrost cycle rather than the supply.
- Damp or buckled flooring under the appliance — Flooring that has darkened or lifted under the cabinet, which dates the leak far earlier than the puddle does.
- NEAR MISS — water only in the drain pan at the back — A wet drain pan is the expected end of the defrost path, not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on the AZB line
- Door seal, alignment or a door held ajar — First on the AZB line because a paper test costs nothing and because a door that does not seal produces both the condensation and the humidity load that blocks the drain in the first place.
- Blocked defrost drain — Second because it is where the water actually goes: melt water that cannot clear the drain backs up under the crispers or freezes on the freezer floor.
- Supply or dispenser line joint — Third: clean pressurised water, which is told apart from melt water by being there whether or not the unit has just run.
- Drain pan or the drain tube outlet — Fourth because the pan and the drain tube outlet are the end of the path and are worth looking at only once everything upstream is proven.
Check in this order, and why
- Close each door on a strip of paper at several points — First because it is free, and because a door that is not sealing is both a cause of condensation and the reason drains overload.
- Check the doors are closing squarely and nothing fouls them — A bin, a shelf or a cabinet leaning back holds a door off its seal without anyone noticing.
- Clear the defrost drain at the rear of the freezer floor — Third: with the humidity source addressed, the drain is where the resulting water has been failing to go.
- Shut the water off and check the back of the unit — Shut the water off and check the back of the cabinet last: it needs an hour of waiting to be conclusive.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live appliance do not mix: dry the floor before working, and if water has reached a socket or an extension lead, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit before touching anything. Close the household water valve before breaking any supply joint.
