The short answer
On the A refrigerators the ice complaint splits cleanly in two — a fill problem or a harvest problem — and one look in the mould separates them. On these models a frozen fill tube is the first thing this page would have you rule out. None of the causes below needs a technician to rule out — only the repair might.
What you observe on these models
- The bin is empty and the maker looks untouched — Nothing has been attempted, which points at the trigger rather than the mechanism.
- The cubes are hollow, small or half formed — A partial fill is a flow problem, not a maker problem.
- The maker buzzes at intervals and nothing follows — The valve is being asked for water and none is arriving.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer is not holding temperature — Fix the cooling first; a maker cannot harvest warm.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Fill tube frozen at the mould — You can see this one: a finger of ice standing where the tube meets the mould is the whole diagnosis. First, because it accounts for every observable above without needing a second fault. One design carries every cabinet size in this family, so it holds across the line.
- Ice maker module stalled or the shut-off arm parked — On an arm-type maker the arm is simply a switch, so it is the first thing to rule out and the fastest. It ranks second — the fault the first check leaves standing.
- Water inlet valve not opening — The valve is electrically simple and mechanically fussy; its inlet screen blocks with grit long before the coil itself fails. Third: a real cause on these cabinets, but a less frequent one.
- Water filter restricted or not seated — A filter that is not seated fully restricts in the same way and usually drips while it does it. Last, which is exactly why the checks above are worth spending first.
- Body: Because this family is one design at several capacities, the air path is the part that is worked hardest at the top of the ladder — which is what moves airflow causes above installation ones here.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the point where the fill tube enters the mould for a plug of ice. — First, because it settles the top of the ranking before anything else is touched.
- Check the shut-off arm is down and that the ejector fingers are parked rather than standing mid-sweep. — Next, once the check above has come back clean.
- Watch a fill: a valve that opens buzzes for a few seconds, and you should be able to hear it. — Last, so that nothing further is spent until the cheaper checks are exhausted.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a door switch to keep a part running while you look at it. Shut the water supply off before disturbing the valve or the fill line, and never thaw a fill tube with a flame or a heat gun.

When to call a technician
Stop when the checks put the fault on the harvest side rather than the fill side: solid ice that is never ejected is a module, a heater or a sensor, and all three sit behind the maker body.
