The short answer
On the AZF freezer this symptom is usually the temperature control, because everything this cabinet does is decided by a single reading and a wrong reading gives a wrong cabinet. The numeric core of these model numbers separates the sizes in the AZF family; the diagnostic order below is common to all of them.
What you observe
- The alarm sounds but everything looks normal — Worth believing: the cabinet has measured something the lid does not show.
- The cabinet runs constantly and never reaches temperature — Continuous running is the machine trying, which rules out most control faults.
- Heavy frost along one edge of the lid or door — Warm moist air is getting in at that point, which names the seal.
- Food at the top is soft while the bottom stays solid — Stratification like this is a sealing or airflow problem rather than a cooling one.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent with no lights at all — A dead cabinet with no lights is a supply or board fault rather than a cooling fault, and it is checked at the socket first.
Causes, most likely first on the AZF family
- Thermostat or thermistor reading wrong — First on this family. A mechanical thermostat that has drifted stops the compressor early; a thermistor that reads cold does the same thing electronically.
- Control board or the compressor never being commanded — Second on these models. It is below the cheaper causes because it needs testing rather than observing.
- Overloaded cabinet, warm load or a hot location — Third. A large warm load takes days to pull down, and during that time every reading looks like a failure.
- Sealed system: lost charge or a failed compressor — Last of the four, and the one to reach for only when the others are clean. A cabinet that runs constantly, never gets cold and has a condenser that never warms has usually lost its charge.
- Body: A brand-generic article on this symptom starts with the lid or door seal. Here the thermostat or thermistor moves ahead of it, because the models in the table share the same construction, so what is true of one is true across the family.
Check in this order, and why
- Leave a thermometer inside for several hours with the lid shut — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, which is minus 18 Celsius, or below; a steady reading well above that with normal cycling points at the control.
- Note whether the compressor ever starts at all over several hours — A compressor that never starts while the cabinet is plainly warm is the point at which this stops being an owner job.
- Note what went in recently and what the room temperature is — A big warm load or an extreme ambient explains a struggling cabinet without any part being at fault.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, which is minus 18 Celsius, or below; food that has thawed should be judged on that basis and not on how it looks. Nothing on the sealed side is owner work, and a loaded chest cabinet is far too heavy to move without help.

When to call a technician
Call once the seal, the clearance, the coil and the thermometer check are all clean and the cabinet still will not hold. Call promptly rather than waiting if the cabinet is full: the cost of the contents usually exceeds the cost of the visit.
