The short answer
On a portable machine the tap connection and the water it delivers explain most poor-wash complaints. Run the tap hot before you start the cycle and check the adapter screen, because a machine fed slow cold water washes badly with nothing wrong inside it.
What you actually see and hear
- Film or grease left on everything, worst on plastics — Wash temperature, which on a portable machine starts with the tap.
- Clean on one side, dirty on the other — The spray arm is blocked or cannot turn freely.
- Grit redeposited on the lower rack — A full filter passing debris back onto the load.
- Results got worse after the machine was moved — The hose or the adapter has been disturbed, kinked or partly blocked.
- NEAR MISS - chalky white marks rather than food soil — Hardness and rinse aid, not a mechanical fault.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Tap connection, adapter screen or a kinked hose — First on this class. A partly blocked adapter screen or a hose kinked behind the machine reduces fill, and a machine that under-fills washes poorly while every part in it tests good.
- Cold or lukewarm supply water — Second. Connect to the hot tap and run it hot before starting, or the machine spends the cycle trying to catch up.
- Blocked spray arm rotation or plugged jets — Third. A compact tub has little clearance and a tall item stops the arm turning.
- Filter and sump full — Fourth. Small filters fill fast and then return soil to the load.
- Overloading a small tub — Fifth. Portables have less capacity than they appear to, and nesting is the usual result.
- Detergent, rinse aid and hardness — Last for food soil, first for chalky marks - two different complaints that often arrive together.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the tap hot before connecting and starting — One habit, and it changes results on most portable machines.
- Unscrew the adapter and check its screen — Debris here throttles the fill and nobody ever looks.
- Spin the spray arm by hand with the racks loaded — Reproduces the fault exactly and takes seconds.
- Pull the filter and look at what is in it — Grit in the filter is grit that was on your plates.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A portable dishwasher puts a live appliance, a mains socket and a hose full of water in the same small space, so switch off at the breaker before moving it or touching a connection. Disconnect the tap adapter before wheeling the machine, and never leave it connected to a live tap while it is unattended.
When to call a technician
Call when the adapter and hose are clear, the tap runs hot, the arm spins freely, the filter is clean and a light load still comes out dirty - that points at the wash pump or the heater. Describe the tap connection when you call, because a technician who does not know the machine is portable will look in the wrong place first. For chalky marks and cloudy glass, no call is needed: that is water hardness and rinse aid, and no part will change it.
