The short answer
On a ZGW refrigerator, an ice-making fault is most often the supply cutting the compressor short: freezing is the last duty a small compressor gets to, so it is the first duty lost when the controller keeps stopping it. The causes below are in likelihood order, cheapest first; working down that order costs less than starting with the part that sounds most alarming.
What you actually observe
- It freezes on mains power but not from the vehicle socket — A supply difference, not an appliance difference.
- Drinks are cold but nothing in the compartment freezes — The classic split: refrigeration is working, freezing duty is not being reached.
- Frost coats the plate but the contents stay soft — Frost is an insulator; the cold is trapped on the plate instead of reaching what sits beside it.
- The whole box is warm and nothing is cold at all — NEAR MISS: that is a cooling failure, and the not-cooling page is the better read of it.
- Body: Where a step below depends on which ZGW listing you own, the table above is the reference; nothing here is written from a model outside it.
Ranked causes on these ZGW models
- 1. Ambient heat and what is being frozen — A box that froze in winter and will not in summer has not developed a fault. It has run out of margin, and clearing heat away from it is the repair. It ranks high on ZGW because with one listing the appliance is a constant, which leaves how it is used as the main variable.
- 2. A supply the controller keeps rejecting — Freezing is the duty that needs the longest uninterrupted run. A supply that sags under load makes the controller stop the compressor early and often, which is enough to hold a chill but never enough to freeze. It sits second here rather than first because the cause above it is cheaper to rule out, not because this one is rarer.
- 3. The set point and the operating mode — Before anything is suspected, the set point has to be low enough to freeze and the mode has to allow the compressor to reach it. Mode matters too: an economy mode caps how hard the compressor is allowed to work.
- 4. Where things sit inside the box — Freezing happens against the plate. Two identical bottles, one touching the plate and one not, behave nothing alike.
Check in this order on the ZGW platform
- 1. Move it out of direct sun and away from anything warm — Ambient heat is capacity, and capacity is what freezing duty runs out of first.
- 2. Run it overnight from a known-good supply — Freezing needs uninterrupted run time; only a stable supply proves whether it can get there.
- 3. Read the set point and the mode on the panel — Costs nothing and settles the most common cause before any hardware is suspected.

Safety
Isolate first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off, and treat a capacitor as charged after the power is gone. Ice comes off with time and a cloth, never with a blade, because what is directly behind the frost is refrigerant tubing.

When to call a technician
Call when the set point, the supply, the frost and the seal are all clean and the compartment still will not freeze. That combination has run out of owner checks, and what remains is the compressor module or the sealed system.
