A leaking UD unit is telling you where its meltwater is going, not that it is broken. Work from the outlet backwards, because everything upstream of a clear drain is cheap to check and quick to exclude, so the ranking below departs from the brand-generic order.
The observables
- Contents at the base sitting in water — Labels soften and packaging swells while everything higher up is dry.
- A wet gasket all along one edge — The seal line itself is beaded, which points at where the warm air is getting in.
- The leak tracks the weather — Worse on humid days, absent in a dry cold room, with nothing about the unit changed.
- NEAR MISS - ice inside but no water anywhere — That is a frosting fault, not a leak, and it belongs on the freezing and ice pages rather than this one.
Causes, most likely first on this line
- A blocked condensate drain path — Ranked first on this line: the drain outlet in the compartment floor is the only route defrost melt has, and on a compact cabinet it is a narrow one.
- A frost sheet releasing its water at once — Next, and close behind: this is why the leak appears after a power interruption, after a move, or after the unit was switched off overnight, and not during normal running.
- The cabinet standing out of level — Then: level is not cosmetic on a unit this size. A small tilt is enough to move the low point of the floor away from the drain, and then every defrost puts water where the seal is, not where the outlet is.
- A split drain hose or a failed seam — Last, and the reason the order matters: once the simple causes are excluded, what is left is a route the water should not have: a hose that has hardened and split, or a seam that has opened. This is the least common cause and the only one on this list that is not owner work.
The order to work in
- Clear and test the compartment drain — Empty the compartment, find the outlet in the floor, and pour a little warm water at it. If it stands rather than draining, that is the fault and nothing further needs checking.
- Look at the cold plate for a frost sheet — Note whether the puddle appeared after the unit was switched off, moved or left open. That sequence points at stored frost rather than at the drain itself.
- Check that the cabinet stands level and square — Put a level across the top in both directions, or simply pour a spoonful of water onto the compartment floor and watch which way it runs. It should run to the outlet.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and the electrical end of a refrigerator do not mix, so dry the floor and isolate the unit before you kneel down beside it.

When this stops being owner work
Call once the drain has been proven clear, the cabinet proven level and the compartment emptied, and the water is still arriving: what remains is behind a panel. Call straight away if the water is anywhere near the machinery end, if a breaker trips, or if the cabinet is warm as well as wet.
