The short answer
An ice-making fault on a UD refrigerator usually comes down to the plate losing contact with what it is meant to freeze, whether through frost, packing or a tray that never touches it. The order that follows puts the likeliest and cheapest causes first, and it is the order worth working in rather than starting with the part that sounds most serious.
What you actually observe
- Frost coats the plate but the contents stay soft — Frost is an insulator; the cold is trapped on the plate instead of reaching what sits beside it.
- Ice forms only on one side of the compartment — Contact and airflow: what touches the plate freezes, what does not, will not.
- Drinks are cold but nothing in the compartment freezes — The classic split: refrigeration is working, freezing duty is not being reached.
- Everything freezes including what should not — NEAR MISS: that is over-cooling, a set point and thermostat question rather than this one.
- Body: There are two UD listings, UD45 and UD55, and nothing below distinguishes between them unless it says so.
What causes it on the UD platform, in likelihood order
- 1. What the box has actually been asked to do — A unit set for chilled storage will hold that set point exactly and never freeze anything, and the display gives an owner no hint that the two duties differ. Most reports of no ice end here. It ranks high on UD because the two listings are close enough in size that usage, not capacity, decides the outcome.
- 2. Lid gasket and latch — Look for the seal fault on a unit that used to freeze and now only chills, especially one that has been carried, dropped or stored with the lid clamped shut for months. Second on UD: it is as common as the cause above it but takes longer to prove, so it is checked afterwards.
- 3. The conditions it is being asked to work in — Freezing takes far more out of a small compressor than chilling does, and every degree of ambient heat takes capacity away from it.
- 4. Contact between the plate and what is being frozen — Air is a poor conductor and packaging is worse.
The order to work in on this platform
- 1. Read the set point and the mode on the panel — Costs nothing and settles the most common cause before any hardware is suspected.
- 2. Check the seal along its whole length with a sheet of paper — Drag on every side is a good seal; a slide anywhere is a leak.
- 3. Move it out of direct sun and away from anything warm — Ambient heat is capacity, and capacity is what freezing duty runs out of first.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off a plate with a knife or a screwdriver: the tubing behind it is thin-walled, and a puncture turns a free defrost into a sealed-system repair. Where a step below depends on which UD listing you own, the table above is the reference; nothing here is written from a model outside it.

When to call a technician
The line is the compressor and its module. A box that chills well and refuses to freeze on a clean supply, in a cool room, with a bare plate, needs a technician rather than another setting change.
