The short answer
A new noise on the RTW line is usually a mounting or contact problem rather than a failing part: match the rhythm of the noise to the fan or to the compressor first; that one observation splits the list in half. Most of what follows can be tested in minutes without a tool. Start with the fan blade catching on something and leave a worn fan bearing until everything cheaper has been excluded.
What the owner actually sees
- A hard knock at the start of each run — One thump as the compressor picks up, then a steady hum; often another at the stop.
- A rattle that comes and goes within a run — It appears for a few seconds at a particular point and then clears on its own.
- A continuous whine while air is moving — It tracks the fan rather than the compressor and stops when the fan does.
- A buzz that you can feel through the case — Felt as much as heard, and it changes if you rest a hand on a panel.
- NEAR MISS - a hum with a burning smell — Isolate it and stop. A hot electrical smell is not something to diagnose by ear.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- The fan blade catching on something — It ranks high because it is easy to confirm and because ice against a blade means a second fault worth knowing about.
- Contents and baskets vibrating — Second: this is the cause that survives every repair attempt, because nobody empties the cabinet before listening. Take everything out, and half of these complaints stop.
- Loose fasteners, a cover or a grille — Third, and worth excluding before going further: a screw that has backed out, a loose rear cover or a grille that has lost a clip buzzes only while the compressor runs, which makes it sound like a motor fault. It is not.
- A worn fan bearing — It ranks below everything free to check because replacing it means getting into the fan housing.
Working order, and the reason for it
- Match the rhythm of the noise to the fan — Listen for whether the noise follows the fan or the compressor. A sound that starts and stops with airflow, and changes pitch as the fan speeds up, is a fouled blade.
- Run the unit empty for a minute — Refill in stages and listen after each. The item that brings the noise back is the one to separate from the wall or the rail.
- Rest a hand on each panel while it runs — Press a flat hand against each panel and the rear cover in turn. A noise that stops under your hand is a panel, and tightening or padding it is the repair.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the machinery bay contains both the electrics and sealed pipework that should not be levered or bent.

Where owner work ends
Anything you can change from outside the cabinet is owner work. A continuous whine from the fan housing, a knock that can be felt through the case, or a noise accompanied by longer run times is a call.
