The short answer
There is no ice maker in a cooler of this kind, so the real questions are why one zone freezes when you did not want it to, and why the other will not. Both come back to a single cooling circuit shared between the zones and to what is packed against the cold wall.
What you actually see and hear
- Drinks freezing solid at one end and staying cool at the other — Normal behaviour for one cooling plate serving a whole cabinet.
- A freezer zone that will not make solid ice in a tray — Usually a setting that is right for drinks and not cold enough to freeze.
- Frost forming inside the cabinet — Humid air entering at the lid seal and freezing on the cold surface.
- Both zones behaving the same however they are set — Suggests a divider or damper problem rather than a cooling one.
- NEAR MISS - no ice maker anywhere in the unit — Correct. These coolers do not have one and never did.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Contents packed against the cooling wall — First. The plate is the coldest surface in the cabinet by a wide margin, and anything touching it freezes regardless of the setting shown.
- Zone settings interacting on a shared circuit — Second on a dual-zone unit. The compressor serves both, so a very cold setting on one zone limits what the other can hold.
- A setting chosen for drinks rather than for freezing — Third, and it is the whole answer for many complaints: a tray will not freeze at a chilled-drinks setting.
- Lid seal admitting humid air — Fourth. It produces frost inside and wastes cooling at the same time.
- Divider or damper not seated — Fifth, on models that have one. It lets the two zones behave as a single space.
- Controller or sensor fault — Last, and the only one that needs the supplier rather than a change of habit.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at what is touching the cold wall — It explains most unwanted freezing immediately.
- Note both zone settings and what each is actually holding — A thermometer in each zone is worth more than the display.
- Check the lid seal for grit and for a flattened section — Frost inside is usually air getting in.
- On a dual-zone model, check the divider is properly seated — A loose divider merges the zones.
What an owner can safely check
- Move contents a finger's width off the cooling wall — Use the basket rather than stacking directly against the plate.
About 10 min
- Put a small thermometer in each zone and read them after a few hours — Displays show a setpoint, not what the contents are experiencing.
Tools: thermometerAbout 240 min
- Set the zones one step apart at a time and let each change settle — Chasing both settings at once makes the behaviour impossible to read.
About 15 min
- Clean the lid seal and the rim it closes onto — Grit is the usual reason a lid stops sealing cleanly.
Tools: clothAbout 10 min
- Reseat the divider if the model has one — A seated divider is what makes two zones behave as two.
About 5 min
- STOP HERE if the zones will not differ with the divider seated and settings apart — That points at the damper or controller and is a supplier question.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Use the supplied mains adapter and not a generic one: a portable cooler's controller expects a specific supply and a mismatched adapter is a fire risk rather than an inconvenience. Do not run the unit with its lid or vent covered, and keep the adapter off the floor where it can get wet.
When to call a technician
Contact the supplier when the two zones cannot be made to behave differently with the divider seated, or when the cabinet freezes everything at the mildest setting - both point at a sensor or controller. For unwanted freezing against the cold wall, and for a tray that will not freeze at a drinks setting, no repair is needed at all: those are the physical realities of a single cooling circuit in a thin-walled portable cabinet, and packing and settings are the whole fix.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the portable compressor cooler on mains power class, not for one family or model line. Where a brand- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and it is linked above, so go there first if your machine is named. What is deliberately not here: compressor and controller part numbers, voltage cut-out settings, insulation thickness and basket dimensions, all of which differ by family and belong on the page for that family.
