The short answer
A cabinet that runs and does not cool is nearly always an airflow or defrost problem, not a compressor. The most useful single clue is whether the freezer is still cold: freezer cold with a warm fridge means air is not moving, and that is a cheaper fault than it sounds.
What you actually see and hear
- The fridge is warm but the freezer is still frozen — Air is not getting from one compartment to the other. The classic frost-free failure.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall rather than a light dusting — The defrost system has fallen behind and the ice is now blocking the evaporator.
- The compressor runs continuously and never satisfies — Consistent with a loaded coil or a lost charge, depending on what else you see.
- Everything is warm and nothing runs at all — Power, thermostat or start circuit, which is a different half of the list.
- NEAR MISS - only the door shelves are warm — Door openings and loading, not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Frosted evaporator from a failed defrost cycle — First on this cabinet type. The heater, the thermostat or the control fails, ice accumulates over weeks, and the airflow stops before anything else does. A warm fridge with a cold freezer is its signature.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second, and it produces the same symptom from the other direction. Listen with the freezer door held shut by hand against its switch.
- Dust-blocked condenser coil or a stopped condenser fan — Third. Heat cannot leave the cabinet, so it runs constantly and slowly loses ground, particularly in a warm room.
- Door seals and over-packing — Fourth. A distorted seal or vents blocked by food both starve the cabinet, and both cost nothing to fix.
- Thermistor or control fault — Fifth. It makes the cabinet run wrongly rather than not at all.
- Compressor or sealed system — Last, and the only one that is not repairable at home. It is also the least likely of the six.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the freezer temperature before anything else — Cold freezer plus warm fridge is airflow. Both warm is a system or power question.
- Listen for the evaporator fan with the freezer door closed — Hold the door switch in by hand and listen through the wall.
- Look for a frost sheet on the freezer rear wall — Thick frost is a defrost fault and an explanation in itself.
- Pull the cabinet out and inspect the coil and condenser fan — Dust here is the most common preventable cause of poor cooling.
What an owner can safely check
- Put a thermometer on a middle shelf and in the freezer overnight — Numbers beat opinions, and the pair tells you which failure mode you have.
Tools: thermometerAbout 15 min
- Vacuum the condenser coil and check the condenser fan turns freely — Do this before spending anything at all.
Tools: vacuum, soft brushAbout 30 min
- Clear the air vents inside both compartments — Packed shelves block the very vents the cabinet depends on.
About 10 min
- Empty the cabinet and defrost it fully for a day with the doors open — If cooling returns afterwards, the defrost system is the fault and it will recur.
Tools: towelsAbout 1440 min
- Test both door seals with a sheet of paper all round — A seal that will not hold paper is letting warm air in all day.
Tools: paperAbout 10 min
- STOP HERE before removing the freezer rear panel or testing the heater — Live terminals and a heater behind that panel.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The defrost heater and the compressor circuit are both live behind the rear and lower panels, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never use a heat gun or a naked flame to clear frost from an evaporator, and never chip at frost with anything metal near the tubing.
When to call a technician
Call when a full manual defrost restores cooling, because that proves the defrost system is failing and it will ice up again within weeks - the heater, the defrost thermostat or the control needs replacing. Call when the evaporator fan is silent with the door switch held in. Call immediately if the compressor never runs at all, or if cooling has been lost long enough that food is above forty degrees Fahrenheit - move perishable food to a cooler first and diagnose second.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the full-size frost-free refrigerator class, not for one family or model line. Where a brand- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer and it is linked above, so go there first if your machine is named. What is deliberately not here: fan and defrost part numbers, thermistor resistance values, refrigerant charge and shelf dimensions, all of which differ by family and belong on the page for that family.
