The short answer
Split this fault first: does the cycle end too soon, or never end at all? On a dryer whose type decides the ranking: vented, condenser or heat-pump, and gas or electric those point in opposite directions, one at sensing and the other at airflow.
What you are actually seeing
- The cycle ends after a few minutes with a damp load — Classic sensing fault: the machine believes the load is dry.
- The cycle runs and runs and never completes — Moisture is not leaving. Look at airflow, the tank or the duct rather than at the control.
- The display counts down and then adds time back — Normal on many machines, which estimate rather than count. It becomes a fault only when the estimate never converges.
- The machine pauses mid-cycle and waits — A cut-out cooling down, a door switch losing contact, or a tank sensor asking to be emptied.
- Timed cycles work but automatic ones do not — That single comparison isolates the sensing path and is the most useful test on this page.
- Not this fault: nothing happens at all when you press start — That is a no-start, and it belongs on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Moisture sensor bars coated with softener residue — First, and easily cleaned: a film across the bars reads as dry clothes, which is why the cycle ends early on a load that is plainly wet.
- Restricted airflow, or a full condensate tank — Second: a blocked duct or filter keeps moisture in the cabinet, so the cycle never satisfies its own end condition.
- The wrong cycle or option for the load — Third, and free: a delicate or low-heat cycle on a heavy load behaves exactly like a machine that will not finish, and an anti-crease option keeps a finished machine tumbling.
- Overloading — Fourth: clothes that cannot tumble do not present themselves to the sensor bars, so the machine samples the same few items and finishes early.
- A thermistor or cycling thermostat drifting — Fifth: it skews the temperature the control is working from, which shortens or lengthens cycles without any other symptom.
- The control board — Last: reachable only by elimination, and the most expensive part on the list. It should never be the first thing replaced.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the same load on a timed cycle — If it dries, the heating is fine and the fault is in sensing — that is half the diagnosis for the cost of one cycle.
- Wipe the sensor bars inside the drum — Free, and the single most productive action on this page.
- Check the filter, the duct or the condensate tank — Whichever your machine has. A cycle that never ends is nearly always this.
- Reduce the load and repeat — Two smaller loads dry faster than one overloaded drum, and the test costs nothing.
- Only then consider sensors, thermostats and the control — They need a meter, and they are the least likely causes here.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the moisture sensor bars — Fine abrasive pad or a cloth with a little white vinegar, then dry. They are the two metal strips inside the drum near the filter opening.

- Clean the lint filter and housing — Wash a glazed filter and vacuum the housing beneath it. Both feed directly into how the cycle behaves.

- Check the duct and the outside flap — A crushed duct or a flap held shut by lint stops moist air leaving, and that is the cause behind most endless cycles.

- Run a comparison cycle and note the difference — Same load, timed versus automatic. Write down what each did; that is the evidence a technician needs.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not use abrasive chemicals on sensor bars, and do not run a cycle with a panel removed to watch what happens. Clear the lint path before extending cycle times to compensate for poor drying: running longer against a restriction is the condition that starts dryer fires. On a gas machine, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the timed-versus-automatic comparison shows both failing, which points past sensing to heat or airflow, and when a clean sensor and a clear duct leave the fault unchanged. Call sooner if cycles end with a burning smell, if the machine becomes hot to the touch on the cabinet, or if it stops and will not restart until it has cooled — that is a cut-out cycling, and it is an airflow problem that wants attention now rather than later.
