The short answer
Before anything is opened on a Alliance washer, check the four things that stop a perfectly healthy machine: the door not locking, the supply, the taps, and a setting that was left on. On a commercial-duty washer running far more cycles a week than a household machine, where seals, bearings and pumps are scheduled wear items, they account for most no-start calls.
What you are actually seeing
- The panel lights but nothing happens when you press start — The machine is awake and declining. Door lock, taps or a lock setting.
- You hear a click at the door but the cycle does not begin — The lock may be engaging without confirming, which is a common failure of the interlock.
- Nothing at all: no lights, no sound — Supply, plug or the main control. Start at the breaker.
- The machine hums or tries to fill and then stops — It is asking for water and not getting enough of it — check the taps and the inlet screens.
- It will not start and there is water in the drum — The drain from the last cycle failed, so the machine will not unlock or proceed.
- Not this fault: it starts and then stalls partway — That is a cycle fault, with a different ranking and a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The door or lid interlock not confirming — First: the part that has to work before anything else can, and the one operated most often. A worn catch or a failed interlock is indistinguishable from a door left ajar.
- Supply, breaker or outlet — Second: free to prove, and the reason a technician is sometimes called out to reset a breaker.
- Water taps closed, or inlet screens blocked — Third: a machine that cannot fill within its allowed time stops and waits. The taps are outside the machine and are the first thing to check after a move or a plumbing job.
- A control lock, child lock or delay start left set — Fourth: free, common, and the cause of a machine that looks broken and is not.
- Water left in the drum from a failed drain — Fifth: the machine refuses to start because it has not finished the last cycle. Clear the drain path and the no-start resolves itself.
- The control board or the start switch — Last, by elimination, and the most expensive thing on this list.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock — Two seconds, and it either confirms or names the interlock.
- Check both taps are open and the hoses are not kinked — A closed tap is the second most common cause and the easiest to overlook after any work nearby.
- Check the breaker and the outlet — Reset once only. A breaker that trips again is reporting a real fault.
- Look for a lock indicator or a delay-start setting — Hold the lock button for several seconds and try again before assuming anything.
- Look through the door for standing water — If there is water, this is a drainage fault wearing a no-start disguise.
What an owner can safely check
- Open and close the door and start a different cycle — Some machines refuse a selection they consider complete, and a different cycle rules that out immediately.

- Check taps, hoses and inlet screens — Turn both taps fully on. If a screen at the inlet is silted, isolate the tap, unscrew the hose and rinse the screen.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door interlock and its wiring exactly as you found them: it holds the door while the drum is turning and while hot water is inside, and it is not an obstacle to be worked around. Do not force a locked door on a machine holding water; drain it first through its own filter or emergency hose. Water and mains share the space inside this machine, so never work on it standing in water.
When to call a technician
Call when the door, the taps, the supply and the lock settings have all been ruled out and the machine still refuses to begin, because what remains is an interlock or a control at line potential. Call sooner if the door will not unlock with water inside, if the machine trips a breaker when start is pressed, or if you can smell hot insulation. Mention what the panel showed and what you heard at the door — those two details usually decide which part the technician brings.
