The short answer
Drainage faults are the most owner-fixable thing a washer does. On a commercial-duty washer running far more cycles a week than a household machine, where seals, bearings and pumps are scheduled wear items, a coin in the pump filter is a more likely explanation than a failed pump, and it costs a tray of water and twenty minutes to rule in.
What you are actually seeing
- Water stands in the drum at the end of the cycle — The plain version of this fault, and the door will usually stay locked with it.
- The machine drains slowly and the cycle overruns — A partial restriction, most often the filter or a silted standpipe.
- The pump runs loudly and nothing leaves — The pump is working against a blockage, or its impeller is jammed.
- The machine stops before the spin — It will not spin on a full drum, so a drainage fault reads as a spin fault.
- Water returns to the drum after draining — A siphon at the standpipe, usually because the hose sits too deep in it.
- Not this fault: no water arrives in the first place — That is a fill problem, and the taps and inlet screens are where it starts.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- A blocked pump filter — First by a distance: coins, hair grips, buttons and lint collect exactly where the filter is designed to catch them, and the machine cannot drain past a full one.
- A kinked, looped or over-raised drain hose — Second: the commonest fault after a machine is moved, and one that no part replacement will fix.
- A blocked standpipe or sink trap — Third: outside the machine and often shared with a sink, which is why the symptom sometimes arrives alongside a slow-draining basin.
- Something jamming the pump impeller — Fourth: usually visible once the filter is out, and usually removable by hand with the power off.
- A pressure or level sensor reading wrong — Fifth: the machine believes there is still water and behaves accordingly, or believes it is empty and stops pumping too early.
- The drain pump itself — Last: a genuine failure, and much rarer than the four blockages above it.
Check in this order, and why
- Switch off at the breaker and get a tray ready — Everything below releases water, and there is more of it than people expect.
- Open and clean the pump filter — The single most productive action on this page, and it needs no tools on most machines.
- Check the drain hose for kinks and height — Pull the machine out far enough to see the whole run, including where it enters the standpipe.
- Test the standpipe with a bucket of water — If the standpipe will not take a poured bucket, the machine was never the problem.
- Only then suspect the pump or the sensor — Both need the machine opened, and by then three cheaper causes are eliminated.
What an owner can safely check
- Isolate the machine and prepare for water — Breaker off, shallow tray, towels down. A drum full of water will come out faster than the tray can take it, so work in stages.

- Drain through the emergency hose, then open the filter — Most machines have a short hose beside the filter for exactly this. Empty it into the tray repeatedly before unscrewing the filter itself.

- Clean the filter and check the impeller turns freely — With the power off, reach in and turn the impeller by hand. Anything grinding or jammed is your fault found.

- Straighten the drain hose and check its height at the standpipe — It should rise to the height the installation requires and no more, and it should not be pushed deep into the pipe.

- Stop here if the pump or the sump must come out — That means the cabinet open with water inside it, beside live terminals.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the filter or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and this job puts water on the floor next to mains wiring. The water in the drum can still be hot: check before you drain it. Leave the door interlock and its wiring exactly as you found them, and never force a locked door on a machine holding water. Do not use a drain chemical in the machine's own filter housing.
When to call a technician
Call once the filter, the hose, the impeller and the standpipe are all clear and the drum still holds water, because what remains is the pump or the level sensor inside the cabinet. Call sooner if the machine trips a breaker while pumping, if the pump makes a grinding noise that survives the filter clean, or if water escapes onto the floor while it runs — that combination points at the sump or its seals rather than at a blockage.
