The short answer
First question: does this machine condense or vent? On a commercial-duty machine whose door, seals and lint path are maintenance items on a schedule, that single answer decides whether a drainage complaint is a real circuit to check or a sign that the water is coming from somewhere other than the dryer.
What you are actually seeing
- The cycle stops and asks for the tank to be emptied — On a condensing machine that is the design working. It becomes a fault when it happens with an empty tank.
- Water stands in the machine or under it — Either the pump is not lifting, the hose is blocked, or the machine is not condensing at all.
- The tank fills far faster or slower than it used to — Faster means a wetter load; slower with damp clothes means the condenser is not doing its job.
- Water runs back down the duct on a vented machine — That is condensation in a cold run, and the fix is insulation and routing rather than a part.
- The pump runs continuously or never runs — Pump or float. Both are ordinary repairs on a condensing machine.
- Not this fault: water appearing only when the washer runs — Then the water is the washer's. Dry the floor and watch which machine wets it.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Condensation in a cold or badly routed duct — First on a vented machine: a long run through an unheated space condenses the moisture it was supposed to remove, and it runs back to the lowest point.
- Another appliance leaking into the same space — Second: washers, sinks and dishwashers share the corner, and a dryer standing in someone else's water gets blamed for it.
- A duct that terminates in the wrong place — Third: venting into a roof space or a cupboard puts the moisture somewhere it will come back from. It is an installation fault rather than a machine fault.
- A restricted duct raising humidity inside the cabinet — Fourth: moisture that cannot leave condenses on the coldest surface available, which is often inside the machine.
- The pump itself — Not applicable on a vented machine, and worth stating plainly so nobody buys one.
- The control or a level sensor — Last: by elimination, and the least likely explanation for a drainage complaint.
Check in this order, and why
- Establish whether the machine vents or condenses — Everything else depends on this, and it is answered by looking at the back of the machine.
- Follow the duct and look for cold runs and low points — Water running back is a routing problem and it is visible along the duct.
- Rule out the neighbouring appliances — Dry the floor thoroughly and run each machine separately until one of them wets it.
- Check the condenser or the duct for lint — A blocked path explains both wet clothes and a dry tank.
- Only then suspect the pump or the control — They need the machine opened and a meter, which is where this stops being owner work.
What an owner can safely check
- Identify the machine type at the back — A duct spigot means vented. A tank in the console or a small drain hose means condensing.

- Trace the duct end to end — Look for sags that hold water, unheated runs, and a termination that actually reaches outside.

- Dry the area and run each nearby appliance alone — This is how you prove whose water it is without dismantling anything.

- Run a small test load and watch what collects — One towel is enough. You are watching whether water arrives where it should.

- Stop here if the pump or the sump must come out — That means the cabinet open next to live terminals, and water and mains in the same space.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or opening a pump filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and water sits next to live parts here. Never work on a machine standing in water. Do not raise or extend a drain hose beyond what the machine's installation allows, and never route a vent duct into an enclosed space. On a gas machine, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when a condensing machine still reports a full tank after the tank, float, filter and hose have been checked, and when a vented machine is producing water that is not condensation and not a neighbour's. Call sooner if water has reached the electrics, the cabinetry or the floor covering — at that point the cost of waiting exceeds the cost of the visit.
