The short answer
A cycle that stalls on the FWN line is nearly always the machine waiting for a condition it cannot reach — a lock it cannot confirm, water it is not getting, or water it cannot get rid of. What you are seeing on the FWN line
- It stops with water in the drum — A drain step it cannot complete, which stalls everything after it.
- It takes hours and keeps redistributing the load — Repeated unbalance detection before spin. The machine is trying, not failing.
- NEAR MISS — it will not begin at all — That is a start fault rather than a cycle fault, and it starts with the supply and the door lock instead.
Causes, most likely first on the FWN line
- The door or lid lock is not confirming — Ranked first on the FWN line because the machine will not turn or spin a drum it cannot prove is closed, and a lock that engages mechanically can still fail to report electrically.
- The machine cannot drain, so the cycle cannot advance — A blocked pump filter or a kinked hose stalls the programme at the drain step. Clearing it usually restarts everything.
- It is not getting the water it is waiting for — Washers wait for a level rather than a time, so a slow fill reads as a stall. Both taps have to be open, not just the cold one.
- The machine is overloaded or badly loaded — Last, and free: rerun with a half-full drum before suspecting a part.
Check in this order, and why that order
- First — close the door firmly and listen for the lock — A click and a locked indicator means the machine is satisfied. No click, or a lamp that never lights, stops the cycle before it starts.
- Then — open the pump filter and check the drain hose — Water in the drum at the stall point means the drain step failed. Clear the filter and check the hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe.
- Only then — check both taps are fully open and listen to the fill — A hot tap left closed stalls many programmes. Feel the hoses: a hose that stays limp is not delivering.
- STOP here if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — Everything above can be done with nothing dismantled; past it the checks need test equipment.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the pump — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the drain impeller can start without warning. Close both supply taps before disturbing a fill hose. A loaded drum is heavy: never tip or walk a machine with water still in it, and get a second pair of hands rather than levering it on the door.
Where the owner job ends
Call when the lock confirms, both taps are open and the filter is clear and the cycle still stalls, because the next checks are the pressure system and the lock circuit. On the FWN line, call rather than continue if a panel has to come off to reach the pump or the lock. Call immediately if the machine trips its breaker mid-cycle or if there is a smell of burning insulation.
