The short answer
Check the door and the dial before suspecting the appliance. On a shared Alera the commonest cause is a door held open by something stored badly, and the second is a setting moved by someone else. A cabinet packed too full to circulate is third. Dusty coils or a genuine sealed-system fault is last and is the only one needing a technician.
What you observe
- The door rests shut but does not pull itself closed — Something is holding it off the seal.
- The dial is somewhere nobody set it — A shared control with no owner.
- Shelves packed solid to the back wall — Air cannot circulate, so pockets stay warm.
- Warm by Friday, fine again on Monday — Weekday traffic, not a failing cabinet.
- NEAR MISS — warm after a delivery of drinks — Normal recovery. Give it a day.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Door not closing, usually held by stored items — First because a breakroom cabinet is loaded by many hands and nobody checks the seal. A carton edge or a bag in the gap keeps the door off the seal all day and all night.
- Temperature setting moved by another user — Second: a shared dial gets adjusted in both directions by people solving their own problem, and the next person inherits a cabinet set somewhere unhelpful.
- Cabinet packed too full to circulate — Third: a shared fridge fills to capacity by midweek, and once air cannot reach the back the pockets behind the load never come down.
- Dusty coils, or a sealed-system fault — Last, and genuinely uncommon: nobody cleans behind an office cabinet, so the condenser furs up. A true sealed-system failure needs a technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door and watch whether it pulls itself shut — Free, and it is the top cause on a shared cabinet.
- Read the dial and set it deliberately — Then label it, so the next person knows.
- Clear enough stock to let air reach the back — Costs nothing and removes the warm pockets.
- Pull the cabinet out and clean the coils — Left until here because it needs the unit moved.

- Put a thermometer on a middle shelf and read it next day — Judge the cabinet by a number, not by opinion.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before cleaning coils or removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and an office socket is often behind a counter where nobody can see what is switched. Never open a sealed refrigerant line. Food shared by a workplace that has been above forty degrees Fahrenheit, which is four degrees Celsius, should be discarded rather than judged by smell.
When to call a technician
Call when the door seals all round, the setting is right, the cabinet has room to circulate, the coils are clean and it still will not hold temperature — the sealed system is then the answer. In a workplace, weigh that against replacement, because a compact cabinet in shared use is rarely worth a major repair. Unplug it immediately if you smell hot insulation.
