The short answer
On the ZMWDUHA line, a machine that will not start is far more often refusing to start than unable to — a door that has not latched, a control lock, or a supply it cannot see. On this page the supply comes first: a dead panel is a circuit question before it is an appliance one. Work through the interlocks before suspecting the control: they are free, immediate and account for most of these calls.
What an owner actually observes on the ZMWDUHA line
- It beeps or flashes and cancels itself — A refusal rather than a failure, and one that usually names the interlock it is unhappy with.
- It starts only if you press the door hard — The latch is not engaging the switch. Alignment, not electronics.
- NEAR MISS — it starts, runs a few minutes and stops — That is a cycle fault, not a start fault: the machine is getting far enough to find something it does not like.
The ranking for the ZMWDUHA line, likeliest first
- No power reaching the machine — Ranked first when the panel is dead: a tripped breaker, a switched spur turned off behind a cupboard or a socket on a shared circuit explains everything with no fault in the appliance.
- The door is not latching fully — A latch that clicks but does not close its switch leaves the machine dead with a lit panel. Push the door firmly and listen for a second click.
- A control lock, delay or demonstration mode is active — Locks are usually cleared by holding one button for a few seconds; a delay counts down silently and looks exactly like a refusal to start.
- A thermal fuse or door switch has failed open — Deliberately last: it is the only cause here that needs test equipment, and the free checks imitate it exactly.
The diagnostic order, and the reason for it
- First — check the breaker and any switch above the worktop — Machines under a sink often share a circuit with a disposer. A dead panel with a healthy breaker means the spur or the socket.
- Then — open the door and close it deliberately, listening for the latch — Check nothing on the top rack is holding it out. A second, softer click is the switch closing; without it nothing will run.
- Only then — hold the control-lock button and check for a delayed start — Most panels clear the lock after a few seconds on one button. A delay counting down silently looks identical to a refusal.
- STOP here if the next check needs a panel off or a meter on live terminals — Everything above can be done with nothing dismantled; past it the checks need test equipment.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the kick plate or the inner door panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the control and heater terminals sit within reach of standing water. Close the supply shut-off under the sink before disturbing any fitting, and never reach into the sump while the machine is powered: the chopper and the drain impeller start without warning.
When it stops being an owner job
Call once the door latches properly, the supply is proven and no lock or delay is set, because the next checks are a meter on the door switch and the thermal fuse behind the inner door panel. On the ZMWDUHA line, call rather than continue if the control panel has to come apart. Call immediately if the machine trips the breaker when it is switched on, or if there is any smell of burning from the door edge.
