The short answer
A new noise from a Admiral dryer almost always comes from something the drum turns on or something loose inside the blower. On a long-serving vented domestic dryer, where lint, thermal cut-outs and worn drum supports account for most of what goes wrong, rollers, the idler pulley, the belt and objects in the blower wheel cover the great majority of these, and the sound each makes is distinctive.
What you are actually seeing
- A rhythmic thump that keeps time with the drum — Worn or flat-spotted drum rollers, the most common mechanical noise on a dryer.
- A squeal that rises with speed — The idler pulley or a dry bearing. It often quietens once warm, which is why it gets ignored until it does not.
- A metallic rattle or clatter that comes and goes — Something loose in the blower wheel. Usually a coin, and usually removable without a part.
- A scraping or grinding that changes when the drum is loaded — Drum glides or the rear bearing, depending on where the sound sits.
- A deep drumming through the floor — Level, feet and contact with a wall or a washer standing beside it — free to fix, frequently misread.
- Not this fault: a thump from a heavy item tumbling — Trainers and belts make noise all by themselves. Run the machine empty to rule that in before anything else.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Worn drum rollers or support wheels — First: they carry the drum's whole weight and they flatten with age, which is why the noise keeps time with the drum rather than with the motor.
- Something loose in the blower wheel — Second, and the cheapest outcome on the page: coins and buttons pass the lint filter housing and clatter around the wheel until they are removed.
- The idler pulley or the belt — Third: a dry idler squeals and a frayed belt slaps. Both are inexpensive parts, and both are usually replaced together once the cabinet is open.
- Worn drum glides or a rear drum bearing — Fourth: a scraping or grinding that gets worse under load, and the repair that most often justifies a technician on an older machine.
- The machine is not level, or it touches something — Fifth: free to check and free to fix, and the cause behind a surprising number of noise complaints on a machine standing beside a washer.
- The motor itself — Last: a genuine motor bearing failure sounds like a continuous whine or growl independent of the drum, and it is the least likely cause here.
Check in this order, and why
- Run the machine empty on an air or cool cycle — It removes the load from the picture and often removes the noise with it.
- Check level and clearance around the cabinet — Free, quick, and it explains drumming noises that no part replacement would have fixed.
- Time the noise against the drum or the motor — Rhythm is the diagnosis here: drum-rate points one way, motor-rate the other.
- Listen at the front, the back and the base in turn — Location narrows it to rollers, blower or motor before a single screw is removed.
- Only then open the cabinet — And only with the machine unplugged, because everything you are reaching for is next to live terminals.
What an owner can safely check
- Empty the drum and run a short air cycle — You are separating the load from the machine. Note whether the noise survives that.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A drum with its belt removed can drop, so it is not a part to hold with one hand while working with the other. Never run the machine with a panel off to locate a noise. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them. On a gas machine, do not disturb the burner or its supply to reach anything on this page.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a grinding or a growl that gets worse under load, which points at a bearing rather than at a roller, and when the free checks leave the sound unchanged. A squeal or a rhythmic thump is a routine repair for a technician and usually means rollers, a belt and an idler fitted in one visit. Call sooner if the noise is accompanied by a burning smell or by the drum slowing under load — that combination points at a belt or a motor under strain.
