The short answer
A portable AcoPower that stops cooling has usually cut out on low voltage rather than failed. Check the supply, the lead and the battery-protection setting before anything else. A blocked vent panel is next, and heat around the unit is third. A genuine sealed-system fault is the least likely of the four and is the only one that needs a technician.
What you observe
- Cools indoors on mains, will not cool in the vehicle — Supply voltage, not refrigeration.
- Runs for a while, then stops and restarts later — The protection cut-out doing its job.
- The vent panel is against luggage or a wall — The condenser cannot shed heat.
- Cools poorly only on hot days or in direct sun — Ambient load beyond what the unit can carry.
- NEAR MISS — cools but the lid is opened constantly — Normal recovery, not a fault.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Low-voltage protection stopping the compressor — First, and by a wide margin, because the unit is built to sacrifice cooling to save the battery. A weak battery, a loaded circuit or a thin lead all produce the same sag and the same shutdown.
- Thin, long or damaged supply cable — Second and closely related: voltage drops along the run, so the fridge sees a weak supply even when the battery is healthy. Swapping to a short heavy lead often settles it.
- Vent panels blocked by luggage or a vehicle wall — Third: the condenser sits behind a side grille that is easy to bury when packing. Heat cannot leave, and cooling collapses on a warm day.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last. Its tell is a unit that runs continuously on a good mains supply, in a cool room, with clear vents, and still never gets cold.
Check in this order, and why
- Run it indoors on mains for a few hours — Cooling here proves the fridge and indicts the supply.
- Check the battery-protection setting and the lead — The top cause, and adjustable without tools.
- Clear space around every vent panel — Free, and it decides the hot-weather complaints.
- Listen for a compressor that runs and never cools — Left until here because it only means anything once supply is clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Run the unit indoors from a mains socket and check it cools — This single test splits supply faults from real ones.
About 60 min
- Set battery protection to its lowest level and retest — Only with a healthy battery, and watch the vehicle starts.
About 20 min
- Swap to the shortest, heaviest supply lead you have — Avoid thin extension leads and daisy-chained sockets.
About 15 min
- Repack so every vent panel has clear air around it — Keep the unit out of direct sun and away from heater ducts.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if it runs on clean mains and never cools — Sealed-system work needs a technician and a licence.
Before you open anything
Safety
Disconnect the unit from both supplies before opening any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a portable can be fed from a socket and a battery at once. Never repair or tape a damaged supply lead — replace it. Never open a refrigerant line: the circuit is sealed and its contents are under pressure. Keep the unit clear of exhausts and heater ducts in a vehicle.
When to call a technician
Call when the unit runs on a good mains supply, in a cool room, with clear vents, and still fails to get cold — that is the sealed system or the compressor, and it needs licensed handling. Call an auto electrician instead if the vehicle socket or the battery is the weak link. Stop using it and disconnect immediately if the lead or plug is hot, or you smell burning.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: cut-out voltages, cable gauges, ambient limits and compressor part identifiers, all of which differ between the single-zone, dual-zone and mains-only families.
