The short answer
A noisy Absocold compact cabinet is usually resonating against its enclosure rather than failing: the surround amplifies an ordinary compressor and any contact point buzzes. Poor rear clearance is the second cause, because it makes the unit run longer and harder. Both are owner-side fixes. A click every few minutes with no sustained running is a start-relay problem and a service call.
What you observe
- A buzz that stops when you press on the cabinet or surround — Resonance, not a failure. You have found it.
- A hum that seems to come from the furniture — The enclosure acting as a sounding board.
- The unit runs almost constantly and sounds strained — Poor clearance behind or above the cabinet.
- A click every few minutes with no running — Start relay or overload. Stop and call.
- NEAR MISS — soft gurgling as the cycle starts — Refrigerant moving. Entirely normal.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- The cabinet resonating against its enclosure — First on a hospitality unit because it is almost always installed inside furniture, and any point where the cabinet touches the surround turns a quiet compressor into a room-filling buzz.
- Insufficient clearance at the rear coil — Second, and specific to built-in compact units: no air behind means poor heat rejection, longer running and a louder machine that is also cooling badly.
- Loose shelves, trays or a rattling drip tray — Third. Free to correct, and easy to confirm by taking each item out in turn.
- Start relay, overload or compressor fault — Last, and the only one that is not owner work. Its signature is a click every few minutes and no sustained running at all.
Check in this order, and why
- Press on the cabinet, then on the surround — If the noise stops under your hand, you are done.
- Check clearance at the rear and above — Poor clearance explains noise and poor cooling together.
- Remove shelves and trays one at a time — Free, and it isolates a rattle in seconds.
- Listen for continuous running versus clicking — Left until last because clicking means stop and call.
What an owner can safely check
- Press firmly on each side of the cabinet and the surround — Locate the contact point while the noise is present.
About 10 min
- Ease the cabinet forward and check rear clearance — The rear coil needs free air to reject heat.
About 15 min
- Remove shelves, trays and the drip tray in turn — Run briefly after each removal to isolate a rattle.
About 20 min
- Level the cabinet so it does not rock — Adjust the feet until it sits firmly on all four.
Tools: spirit levelAbout 15 min
- STOP HERE if it clicks without running — Start relay and compressor testing needs a meter.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching behind it; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start relay sits directly beside the compressor. The rear coil and the compressor run hot enough to burn after a cycle, so let them cool. Never cut or lever a refrigerant line to gain access, and get help before drawing a built-in cabinet out of furniture.
When to call a technician
Call once the cabinet is clear of its surround, the clearance is right, the shelves are out and a mechanical noise remains — that is a fan or a compressor mount. Call sooner if the unit clicks every few minutes without running, because that is the start relay or the compressor. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil around the compressor, and unplug the unit while you wait.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the appliance class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer and you should start there. Deliberately absent: relay and compressor part identifiers, clearance dimensions, enclosure cut-out sizes and refrigerant charge figures, all of which differ between the freestanding, built-in and hospitality-unit families.
