Heating element relay

A stuck-on heating relay is a fire hazard. If the dryer overheats or the thermal fuse blows repeatedly, do not bypass the fuse — replace the control board.
Check the heating element for continuity — should read 8-20 ohms depending on the model
Test the heating element for ground fault — measure between each terminal and the element housing. Any reading means a grounded element that must be replaced
Inspect the relay on the main control board that powers the heating element — listen for a click when the cycle calls for heat
Check the high-limit thermostat and thermal fuse on the heater housing for continuity
If the relay is welded closed (stuck on), the control board must be replaced
Pro Diagnostic Tip
A welded relay on the control board is dangerous — it can keep the heater on continuously, bypassing all temperature controls. If the dryer runs extremely hot and does not cycle the heater off, immediately unplug and replace the control board. This is more common after power surges on Whirlpool WED and Maytag MEDB models.
