Heater electronics error

Triac failure can cause heater to run continuously. Disconnect power immediately if water is overheating or steaming excessively.
Disconnect power and access the control board
Measure heater element resistance (expect 10-20 ohms)
Check triac on control board for short circuit
Verify wiring between board and heater element for damage
Pro Diagnostic Tip
E04 is a heater-electronics fault: the triac that switches the flow-through heater has shorted or the board can no longer control it. Sacramento hard water accelerates scale on the inline heater, raising current draw until the triac fails, so descale before condemning the board — a scaled heater will just take out the replacement triac too. Unlike E09 (an open heating element), E04 is the control side of heating, which is why it can leave the heater stuck ON and steaming rather than cold.
