Answer first
On a Winson compact refrigerator, making a new noise usually comes down to an uneven floor, or the cabinet touching something, with a loose rear panel, drain tube or shelf next. Before assuming the worst, establish whether the noise tracks something turning, because several of the sounds a refrigerator makes are not faults at all.
What you actually observe
- A hum, drone or buzz that was not there a month ago — Note whether it comes and goes with the compressor, because that alone halves the list.
- A rattle or a chirp from inside the cabinet
- NEAR MISS — the noise comes with a cabinet that is no longer cold — That is a cooling fault first and a noise second: read the cooling-failure page for this cabinet.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- An uneven floor, or the cabinet touching something — First on a light compact cabinet, because there is not enough mass to absorb its own vibration: a cabinet touching a wall, a counter or a neighbouring unit is the single commonest noise complaint in this class.
- A loose rear panel, drain tube or shelf — Second. Thin panels and few fasteners mean a drain tube or a rear cover can buzz against the shell at one particular compressor speed and be silent at every other.
- The condenser fan at the base or the rear — Third: a small fan in a tight compartment picks up debris easily, and clears just as easily.
- Hardened compressor mounting grommets — Fourth, and the point at which the repair usually stops being worth doing on a cabinet in this class.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Rock the cabinet gently at each front corner — Any movement at all means it is standing on three feet, and that is enough to turn vibration into noise. It goes first: top-ranked above, and free to rule out.
- Press a hand against the rear panel and the sides while the noise is happening — A buzz that changes or stops under hand pressure is a loose panel, tube or shelf. Second: the next cause in the ranking, and this check separates it from the first.
- Listen at the base or the back of the cabinet while the compressor runs — A rattle that starts and stops with the compressor comes from the condenser fan compartment. Third, once both checks above come back clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Set a level on the cabinet and adjust the feet until it does not rock — The cheapest fix there is, and it removes a whole class of noise complaints.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired as it is and do not defeat it to watch something run. If you find oil outside the tubing, stop: the sealed system is open, and refrigerant work is licensed work.
Where an owner check ends
Call when the noise rises with the compressor and you can feel it through the cabinet rather than hear it in the air, and call as soon as a noise is joined by a loss of cooling.
