The short answer
The usual answer on this unit is the bail arm or shut-off lever left in the off position, with water supply shut off, kinked or never fully opened close behind. Both are upstream of the ice maker itself. Everything above the last cause is owner-checkable with no tools, and this page stops before anything live.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- The dispenser gives water but no ice — Supply is fine to the door, so the fault is between there and the mould.
- You hear a fill buzz but no water arrives — The valve is being told to open and nothing is coming through it.
- NEAR MISS: the whole cabinet is warm — Then this is a cooling fault, and the ice maker is a symptom rather than the problem.
The ranking: most likely cause first
- The bail arm or shut-off lever left in the off position — Every ice maker has a mechanical or infrared level sensor. A bail arm lifted by a bag of frozen peas reads as a full bin and stops production dead. First, and the whole order below follows from it: it is the cause that costs nothing to rule out and the one that is most often the whole answer.
- Water supply shut off, kinked or never fully opened — The saddle valve behind the unit gets closed for a plumbing job, knocked when the fridge is pushed back, or was never opened fully after installation. Next, and for a closely related reason: it is the first thing disturbed whenever the unit is moved, and moving a refrigerator is exactly what happens before this fault appears.
- A water filter that is overdue or wrongly seated — A clogged filter drops flow below what the valve needs to fill the mould in its timed fill. Third: it is a consumable that almost nobody replaces on schedule, and its failure mode is gradual rather than sudden.
- A failed ice maker module or harness — The motor, thermostat and heater live in one sealed module. Bottom of the list, deliberately: everything above it produces the same empty bin for a fraction of the cost.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the bail arm is down, or that nothing blocks the level sensor window — The cheapest check on the page and the one to do first if the bin is not full.
- Trace the water line behind the unit and check the valve is fully open — A closed or half-turned valve explains every symptom on this page at once.
- Check when the filter was last changed and that it is seated fully — Small cubes before no cubes is the filter pattern.
What an owner can safely check
- Put the bail arm down, or clear anything sitting in front of the level sensor — Then give it a full day before judging.

- Pull the unit out and follow the water line back to its shut-off valve — Open it fully. Check the line is not crushed against the wall.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if the fault is on the sealed system — Refrigerant is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools.
Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or pulling the ice maker. Shut the water supply off before you disturb any fitting, and never thaw a fill tube with a heat gun, a hair dryer on high or boiling water: the plastic distorts and you will turn a free fix into a parts job. Never chip ice out of the mould with a blade.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call once water is confirmed arriving at the mould and the freezer is holding temperature, because at that point the fault is inside the module or its harness. Call sooner if you find water anywhere it should not be, or if the unit trips a breaker when the ice maker tries to cycle.
