Ask any appliance repair technician what brand they have in their own home. Go ahead — next time a tech is at your house, ask. The answer is almost never Samsung. I have been repairing appliances across the Bay Area and Sacramento for over a decade, and this is the one opinion every technician I know shares: Samsung makes beautiful appliances that break too often, cost too much to fix, and frustrate everyone involved.
This is not brand rivalry. It is data.
The Numbers Behind the Reputation
Samsung is the third-largest appliance manufacturer in the United States by market share. They sell a massive volume of refrigerators, washers, dishwashers, and ranges. But our service data paints a consistent picture:
| Metric | Samsung | Industry Average | Best-in-Class (Bosch/Whirlpool) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-year service rate (all categories) | 22.7% | 14.5% | 9–11% |
| Average age at first service call | 3.4 years | 4.8 years | 5.2–5.8 years |
| Average repair cost | $310 | $230 | $195–$210 |
| Parts availability (in-stock rate) | 62% | 85% | 92% |
| Repeat repair within 12 months | 18% | 9% | 6% |
Source: EasyBear service data 2023–2026, cross-referenced with Consumer Reports 2025 reliability rankings and Yale Appliance 2025 service rate data.
That last row is the one that matters most. Nearly one in five Samsung repairs leads to a second service call within a year. That is not a coincidence — it reflects systemic design issues, not isolated defects.

Samsung Refrigerators: The Ice Maker Problem
If you have owned a Samsung refrigerator, you already know. The ice maker is Samsung's most infamous failure point. In our Sacramento service area alone, we handle Samsung ice maker repairs weekly — sometimes daily during summer.
The issue is well-documented: Samsung's ice makers use a design prone to frost buildup around the ice bucket and fan assembly. Ice accumulates, the fan jams, cooling becomes uneven, and the unit either stops making ice or — worse — starts leaking water inside the refrigerator compartment.
What we see in the field:
| Samsung Refrigerator Issue | % of Samsung Fridge Calls | Avg Repair Cost | Recurrence Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ice maker failure/freeze-up | 38% | $280–$350 | 31% within 18 months |
| Cooling system failure | 22% | $350–$550 | 14% |
| Control board malfunction | 15% | $300–$450 | 11% |
| Water leak (internal) | 12% | $200–$300 | 19% |
| Door seal / gasket | 8% | $150–$250 | 5% |
| Other | 5% | Varies | — |
Samsung released multiple technical service bulletins for ice maker issues and eventually offered a "fix kit" for affected models. Our technicians have installed hundreds of these kits. Some help; many do not. The underlying design has a fundamental thermal management problem that a retrofit kit cannot fully solve.
Consumer Reports downgraded several Samsung French-door refrigerator models in their 2024 and 2025 reliability surveys specifically because of ice maker failures. That is rare — Consumer Reports does not downgrade lightly.
Samsung Washers: The Spider Arm and VRT Problems
Samsung front-load washers introduced two problems that our technicians dread: spider arm corrosion and VRT (Vibration Reduction Technology) failures.
Spider arm corrosion: The spider arm is the bracket connecting the wash drum to the drive shaft. In Samsung washers, this component is made from a zinc-aluminum alloy that corrodes when exposed to certain detergents and moisture over time. When it corrodes, the drum wobbles, then cracks, then detaches. Replacing a corroded spider arm typically costs $350–$500 including labor — and often the entire drum assembly needs replacement, pushing the cost to $600+.
This is not a Samsung-only problem, but Samsung's corrosion rate in our service data is roughly double that of comparable LG or Whirlpool front-loaders.
VRT failures: Samsung's VRT system uses counterweights and suspension springs to reduce vibration during spin cycles. When these components wear — and they wear faster than competitors' equivalents — the washer develops violent shaking, excessive noise, and error codes (most commonly UB or DC). The repair involves replacing multiple suspension rods and shock absorbers, a $250–$400 job.

The Parts Problem
Even when the diagnosis is straightforward, Samsung repairs are complicated by parts availability. Samsung's appliance parts supply chain is noticeably worse than Whirlpool, GE, or Bosch.
In our experience, Samsung parts require a longer wait time than parts for other major brands. Whirlpool parts are typically available same-day or next-day from regional distributors. Samsung parts frequently require ordering directly from Samsung or third-party suppliers with 5–14 day lead times.
For our customers in the Bay Area and Sacramento, this means a Samsung repair that should take one visit often takes two — one to diagnose and order the part, another to install it. That is two days off work, two scheduling windows, and an extra week without a functional appliance.
Why Samsung Keeps Selling
If Samsung appliances are less reliable, why do they sell so well? Three reasons:
1. Price-to-feature ratio. Samsung offers more visible features per dollar than almost any competitor. A Samsung refrigerator with a Family Hub touchscreen, FlexZone drawer, and WiFi connectivity costs less than a comparable LG or GE Profile model. At the showroom, it looks like an incredible deal.
2. Retail partnerships. Samsung invests heavily in retail floor space and placement. At Home Depot and Lowes, Samsung models often occupy premium positions with attractive promotional pricing. Sales staff are incentivized to push high-margin Samsung packages.
3. Design aesthetics. Samsung appliances look stunning. The Bespoke line, the minimalist handles, the fingerprint-resistant finishes — Samsung's industrial design team is genuinely excellent. Unfortunately, design quality and engineering quality are different departments.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

What Technicians Actually Buy
I surveyed 30 appliance technicians across Northern California — independent operators, franchise techs, and our own EasyBear team. Here is what they reported having in their own homes:
| Appliance | Most Popular Brand Among Techs | Runner-Up | Samsung Users |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | Whirlpool (37%) | GE (23%) | 3% |
| Dishwasher | Bosch (54%) | KitchenAid (19%) | 0% |
| Washer | Whirlpool/Maytag (42%) | LG (22%) | 7% |
| Dryer | Whirlpool/Maytag (39%) | LG (24%) | 7% |
| Range | GE (31%) | Whirlpool (28%) | 10% |
Zero out of 30 technicians had a Samsung dishwasher. Only one had a Samsung refrigerator — and he told me he bought it before becoming a technician.
The brands technicians choose share common traits: simple designs, standardized parts, proven track records. These are not exciting choices. They are boring, reliable, and cheap to maintain.

The Counterargument: Samsung Is Improving
To be fair, Samsung's recent models show improvement. The 2025 and 2026 model-year washers address the spider arm corrosion issue with improved alloys. Some newer refrigerator lines use a redesigned ice maker. Samsung's customer service has also improved with expanded warranty programs for known defect models.
But "improving" is not "improved." It will take 3–5 years of field data before we can confirm that these design changes have meaningfully reduced failure rates. Until then, our recommendation remains unchanged.

Our Honest Recommendation
We are not telling you to boycott Samsung. If you already own a Samsung appliance, EasyBear services them daily — we know these machines inside and out. But if you are buying new and reliability is a priority, our technicians recommend looking at Whirlpool, Bosch, or GE first.
The most expensive appliance is not the one with the highest price tag. It is the one that breaks every three years, takes two weeks to get parts, and costs $300+ each time. In our service data, Samsung appliances hit that profile more often than any other major brand.
Already Own Samsung? Here Is What to Do
If you have Samsung appliances, keep them maintained:
- Refrigerators: Defrost the ice maker area every 6 months. Do not ignore unusual noises from the fan assembly.
- Washers: Use HE detergent only. Run a cleaning cycle monthly. If you notice drum wobble, call before the spider arm cracks completely.
- Dishwashers: Clean the filter monthly. Watch for drainage issues early.
And if something breaks, book a service call sooner rather than later. Samsung problems tend to cascade — a small issue ignored becomes an expensive one quickly.
Book a Samsung repair — our technicians specialize in all Samsung models.
Is It Worth Your Time?
The average DIY appliance repair takes 4-6 hours of research, troubleshooting, and parts ordering — with no guarantee of a correct diagnosis. Our technician diagnoses the issue in about 30 minutes — same-day appointments available.
