What this usually is
A Wascomat that will not start points first at no power reaching the machine. Most of these are settled standing in front of the machine. The early checks cost nothing and the page stops before any live terminal.
What you actually observe
- The door will not lock, or unlocks straight away — The interlock is not confirming, so nothing can begin.
- It starts and stops again within seconds — It began, found a condition it did not like and gave up.
- NEAR MISS: it runs but never fills — Check the taps first, then read the cycle page.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- No power reaching the machine — A tripped breaker, a socket behind the machine that has worked loose, or an extension lead that has given up. The panel is dark, which means the machine is absent rather than refusing. It leads the list on a Wascomat washing machine because a washing machine socket sits behind a heavy appliance that vibrates, which is exactly how a plug works loose.
- Child lock, delay start or a paused programme — A key symbol on the display, a delay someone set without meaning to, or a cycle left paused leaves a machine that lights up, accepts nothing and looks broken. Next, and for a closely related reason: it is free to rule out, and on a machine with a touch panel it is the answer far more often than owners expect.
- A door or lid that is not latching — The machine will not run until the interlock confirms the door is shut. Third, once the two above are clean: it is the interlock every cycle depends on and a mechanical part operated several times a day, so it wears in a way the electronics do not.
- A failed door interlock, mains filter or control board — The interlock assembly, the mains suppression filter and the board are each capable of leaving a machine dark or dead with no other clue, and all three need a meter to tell apart. The order to check in
- Check the breaker and try the socket with something else — A dark panel sends you to the supply; a lit one does not.
- Look for a lock or delay symbol on the display — Both are set by accident easily and cleared just as easily.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock to click — No click, or an intermittent one, is the latch.

- Check the breaker, then test the socket with a lamp or a phone charger — A washing machine should not be on an extension lead.

Read this before you touch it
Safety
Cut the power at the breaker and close both taps before starting. Expect water at the filter and expect it to be hot on a machine that has just run, so open it in stages over a tray. Never force a locked door with water still in the drum, and never tape or wedge a lid switch to get a cycle to run.
Where an owner check ends
Call once the door latches properly, the socket is confirmed live, the controls are unlocked and the taps are open, because what is left is the interlock, the filter or the board. Call immediately if the machine trips a breaker, smells hot, or has burn marks at the plug.
